(The moment David became Dadvid)

The last day of camp.

The last week of summer.

David could hardly contain his sadness, most parents had already picked up their kids which left Max, Nikki, and Neil to themselves.

David watched the trio as they waited for their own parents. Nikki and Neil's parents had moved in together since Parent's Day and were also far from the camp, so it was understandable why it took so long for them to arrive.

Max's parents... David didn't know what to think of them. He didn't like them, sure, but how bad was it really? They didn't come to Parent's Day and David hoped that it was because their work schedules kept them away. Soon, the sound of an engine grew, and a car pulled up to the entrance of the camp, causing the remaining campers and the two counselors to look.

It was a fairly new car, not a speck of dirt on it despite the fact they were in the forest. Black paint surrounded the car and a woman appeared from the passenger seat.

David was the first to walk up, holding out a hand. The resemblance was uncanny, these were, in fact, Max's parents.

"So you must be Max's parents, right?" David started.

Max's mom cocked an eyebrow at the counselor.

"Right... Where is he?" she asked with an impatient tone.

Before David could answer, Max was already by his side, looking at the ground.

"Come on," Max's mom had already begun to walk back to the car but Max didn't move.

David watched the two, thoughts racing through his mind. Max's family was noticeably different from the other campers. Other parents had come and hugged their child, thanked the counselors, say the usual "we missed you so much" speech, and drove home. This reunion felt... cold... compared to the other ones. His thoughts were interrupted as Max's mom spoke up again.

"Now."

Max still didn't move, he continued to stare at the ground in silence.

"You're such a pathetic child. I don't even know why we try with you. You're disrespectful to us. We should just leave you here to rot."

David jumped slightly when Max finally spoke.

"Then why don't you?"

Max's mom gasped. "How dare you talk to your mother like that! We tried everything to make you happy and this is how you repay us?"

"What are you even talking about? You never even look my way at home, and when you do decide to acknowledge me it's hell. I was actually okay here because I didn't have to deal with your fucking bullshit every day! Why don't you and dad just leave me the fuck alone?" Max was yelling at this point.

Everything was silent for what felt like an eternity.

Max's mom slowly walked in front of Max before reaching eye level with him and inches away from his face.

"Fine," she began quietly and bitterly, "you want us to leave you alone? Fine. I hope you know that no one, NO ONE will ever want to take you in." She stood up.

That was when David had enough and before he could give a second thought, he pushed his way between Max and his mom, looking directly in her own eyes just as she had just done.

"Listen here. I don't care who you are, what you do, or who you know. But I will not let you talk to Max like that. I'll take him in because I care about him, and you don't fucking deserve him."

"Okay then. Take him. We were going to give him up anyway," she quickly agreed. She then quickly went back to the car, got out a folder with papers in it, then handed back to David.

"Everything in there will allow you to take him in," she turned to Max, "I hope you're happy, you bastard."

Max's mom quickly returned to the car and it was soon out of sight.

Max watched the car leave, multiple emotions written on his face. Anger, sadness, confusion... everything but happiness.

"So... What happens now?" Neil was the one to speak up first. Max shrugged in response.

"I guess I'll go into the fost-" David interrupted the ten-year-old.

"No, you're not. I meant it when I said I'll take you in. Right after Neil and Nikki go home, we'll go get this sorted out."

"Oh, that's so cool! David gets to be your dad!" Nikki exclaimed.

Max stared at David in disbelief. He knew that the man cared about him, but not this much.

It wasn't long after that when Nikki and Neil's parents came to take them home, which left Gwen, David, and Max by themselves.

"Well, I guess we can get going then, huh?" David said, picking up Max's bag.

Max walked quietly to David's car and the counselor sighed.

"I really don't want to mess this up, Gwen."

"You won't," Gwen put a hand on David's shoulder, "I'll help you."

David turned to her. "Wait, what?"

Gwen shrugged. "I care about that little shit just as much as you do. I wanna see him happy."

David smiled.

Maybe it will be okay.
