The car broke outside the house, throwing up a few limp brown leaves as it did so. Sarah’s boots clunked against the tarmac as she stepped out of the car, taking in the house before her. She turned to her brother, who had just stepped out of the front. Both found themselves hit with nostalgia, a chill passing through them. Sarah exhaled deeply, her breath fogging in the air and floating upwards. She made her way to the other side of the car, pulling open the door. The girl inside sat with her arms folded, a sulk on her face.
“Come on, Kira.” Sarah leant on the open door, her eyebrow slightly raised.
“No.” Kira’s tone was sharp and determined, “I don’t wanna go in there.” Sarah inhaled deeply.
“Please? Just for a bit, I have somewhere else in mind if it gets too much.” Kira turned her head to face her mother, biting the inside of her cheek.
“Fine.” She swung her legs out, pulling her backpack out with her. Sarah slammed the door behind her and ran a hand through her hair. Kira marched on towards the house with Sarah and Felix following, their steps pretty much perfectly synched.
“How is this place not sold yet?” Felix looked up as Sarah searched for the key.
“We got a little help from an old friend and an even older enemy.” Felix furrowed his brow in confusion but decided not to press the issue any further. The trio stepped into the house, suddenly feeling as though they had found a portal. Chalk drawings still scrawled underneath the stairs, a few jackets still hanging limp on the hooks. A bottle of bourbon sat on the table, still untouched for the half a decade since it’d last been consumed.
