Sarah settled into the plush sofa, the mug of tea warming her tough calloused palm. She sipped it gently before placing it onto the coffee table. Cosima sat opposite her on the sofa, Delphine leaning on the back of the sofa, twirling one of Cosimas dreads absentmindedly round her neatly manicured finger. Kira stood by the large white cage in the corner, letting the small hamster inside scurry onto her palm, exploring her hand and her arm.
"What's his name, Auntie Cosima?" She looked down at the little ginger rodent staring up at her with his round beady eyes. I
"Helium. Helium the hamster." Cosima smiled as Kira held a little treat above the critter, watching as he gently grabbed it and stuffed it into his pouch. Gently, Kira placed him back onto his bed of sawdust and closed the lid.
"Make sure it's closed, Kira." Sarah tilted her head, looking over to her daughter as she made her over to the couch.
"I did, don't worry" Kira took her seat next to Sarah, pulling out her phone and opening one app or another.
"So what made you come back here after all this time?" Sarah bit at her nail as her sister fired out her question.
" Umm.. nostalgia, I guess? " Sarah shrugged. Cosima raised an eyebrow.
"Is that really it?" Sarah sighed as Cosima pushed on.
" Well... " she leant forward, resting her arms on her knees. "I wanted to see you lot. Kira loves seeing you all, it's not fair to keep her away from you all." She looked to her side at her daughter who seemed unaware of the conversation, then back to Cosima.
"Took you long enough, it's been ages." Delphine looked at Cosima, shaking her head a little.
"Cosima, just leave it. It's obvious why she hasn't been back, just leave it. Stop pushing." Thinking of a way to divert Kira from the rapidly building tension, she grabbed Cosimas empty coffee cup, taking it to the kitchen sink.
"Kira, there's cookies in the kitchen if you want a couple?" Kira jumped from the sofa, following Delphine, leaving Cosima and Sarah alone.
"Well, are you gonna visit all of us?" Cosima ignored her wife's words, questioning again. Sarah sighed,
"What's that meant to mean? Course I am, I'm going to Alisons tomorrow to see her and Helena"
"You know exactly what that means. You can't just ignore her after what she did for us."
"Yes, I can, Cos." Sarah shook her head, downing the last of her tea.
" Sarah, she helped us achieve a life-long goal. She's part of our family!" She almost spat these words at her sister. Her respect for Rachel had changed significantly since Sarah had left Canada.
"No she isn't! I'm not taking Kira to see her. No way." Cosima shook her head.
"Your move, Sarah. We built these bridges, you can't just storm in and burn them again." Pushing her glasses up her nose, she rose from the sofa to join her wife in the kitchen, leaving Sarah to mull over the interaction.
