"New Girls are Always Trouble"

Before I had time to argue, Ms. Attridge was off again, as if nothing had happened.  "I'll get one of our students to show you to your room and you can unpack your things.  You can put your suitcases and your instrument in the attic."  I didn't bother saying anything.  What was the point?  She had won, and we both knew it.  "Now stay there," she said "and I'll just get someone for you."  She came back a few minutes later with a tall, dark haired girl.  Ms Attridge signalled for me to go out into the hall with the girl.  When we were alone, I decided I should try to be nice and maybe I could become friends with the girl. "Hey..." I said with a nervous smile.  "I'm Olivia.  What's your name?"  The girl remained expressionless and said "My name is Lexie Murray, but you don't need to know that because we won't be talking to each other much." I was confused "What do you mean?" I asked her curiously.  Lexie rolled her eyes. "For a start, you're like 13 and I'm 16, and anyway, nobody wants to be friends with the new students.  They're always trouble."  I really wanted to give her a piece of my mind, but I managed to hold it in.   I needed to make a good first impression.  I simply said "I guess I'm small for my age, but I'm actually fifteen soon.  Also, what makes you think new students are always trouble?"
Lexie rolled her eyes again and said in a sarcastic tone "You really are a bright spark aren't you?  New people are always trouble, because they obviously left their old school for a reason." I was really angry. I was ready to burst into tears.  All I did was ask a friendly question and she just fired insult upon insult towards me.  I couldn't be civil with this ignorant girl anymore.  " For your information, I don't want to be here.  I'd be quite happy to be sitting in a classroom in my old school than talking to you, but unfortunately, I couldn't attend my old school anymore for reasons that don't concern YOU, so it would be much appreciated if you'd keep your nose out of my business."  Lexie looked shocked, as if nobody had ever argued back to her before.  She didn't reply, she simply showed me where my room was and gave me directions to the attic. I unpacked my clothes and my other things and then I brought my cases upstairs to the attic. I was about to leave my violin when I had an idea.  I could leave my violin case in the attic but sneak the actual violin down to my room!  I gently took the instrument out of its case, took off my blazer and wrapped it around my violin.   I went back down to my room and put my violin at the back of my cupboard, behind a neat pile of books.  I felt my mood lighten just having it in my room.  It was only then that I realised there was two other beds in the room.  I really hoped my roommates would be nice, because the last thing I needed was to spend the year with someone like Lexie.  At that moment a shrill electronic bell rang and the sound of chattering voices sounded in the corridor.  I tried my best to look cool by lying carelessly on my bed with my earphones in.  There was a pile of music books and manuscripts next to my bed.  After a few minutes, the door burst open and two giggling girls stumbled in.  One was tall and thin and she had light brown hair with blonde ends. The other one was shorter with long blonde hair tied back in an effortless messy bun.  They were both looking at the blonde girl's phone, and it was a few minutes before they noticed me.  The brown-haired girl looked up and stopped.  She nudged the other girl who then in turn looked up at me.  "Oh, hi!" The blonde girl said. "You must be our new roommate." She sounded friendly.  "Yeah, I think so." I said "I'm Olivia by the way."  The brown haired girl smiled and said "I'm Julie and this is Alice. What classes are you doing?" That's where I got stuck.  I had assumed I would be doing music as my main subject, but obviously that wouldn't be possible. "Umm..well..I'm hoping to do biology, French and Spanish as my extra subjects, and well...you see I had hoped to do music as my main subject, but Ms. Attridge...informed me that music isn't an option here."  Julie shook her head and said "I'm doing Economics as my main subject and then geography, maths and physics as my extras.  So we won't be in the same classes.  And yeah, music isn't a subject here.  What are you going to do instead?"  I shrugged because I honestly had no idea.  Alice piped up. "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find something you'll like.  I'll help you if you like.  I do Classical Studies as my main, and French, Latin and History for my other subjects.  We might be in the same French class, but there's four different classes so I don't know.  I can get you a subject list if you like"  I was grateful that she was trying to help, but I felt like I couldn't do anything if I couldn't do music. After I thanked them both Julie said "We're going down to the library now until teatime to study.  You can come if you want.  Classes are finished for the day anyway."  I thanked her for the offer before saying "sorry, I might just stay here to unpack a bit more. Thanks anyway though."
