The 5th Wave - Rick Yancey (2013)
'Forget about flying saucers and little green men and giant mechanical spiders spitting out death rays. Forget about epic battles with tanks and fighter jets and the final victory of us scrappy, unbroken, intrepid humans over the bug-eyed swarm. That's about as far from the truth as their dying planet was from our living one.
The truth is, once they found us, we were toast.'
The others have attacked.
'Sometimes I think I might be the last human on Earth.'
17 year old Cassie (for Cassiopeia, not Cassandra or Cassidy) is alone and fighting for survival.
'In the 4th Wave, you can't trust that people are still people. But you can trust that your gun is still your gun.'
Cassie has a promise to keep and she will do anything to make sure she goes through with it.
Nowhere is safe. Cassie is being watched. Will she survive long enough to keep her promise?
Cassie has no one, her brother, Sam has been taken and everyone she knows is dead. Cassie must brave the world, but the world is changing. Cassie is being watched. A Silencer is watching her, always a step ahead. So why hasn't he killed her yet? What is so special about Cassie?
The others are everywhere. There is no way to tell who is who. Who is a silencer and who is a human. So what else is there to do? Shoot or be shot.
Yancey portrays Cassie as changed girl. A girl who knows pain and will do whatever she needs to in order to survive. Yancey uses many different points of views in this story, which makes the story more interesting. However he does not tell you who's point of view you are about to read from, at the beginning of the book I found this confusing. The change in pov made it harder for me to understand and picture what was happening.
Yancey's style of writing is one I think many kids (11-16) can relate to, the main character, Cassie thinks like they do and makes the story all the more fun to read.
I can't wait to read the sequel; The Infinite Sea!
Rating: 3.5/5
