My hands ran across the wall, trying to make my way through the darkness. My eyes slowly started to adjust until I met a door. I gripped it and pulled it open as gently and slowly as I could. Concrete stairs that sloped down was revealed.
Why did I have to be a basement? I groaned, walking down the stairs. Each foot placed down carefully so I didn't slip. I stepped off the last step and saw it was a long narrow hallway with a lantern at the end of it. The hair on my neck stood up as I was overwhelmed with the suffocating feeling of danger and dread.
My gut feeling was fighting with my heart. Normally I go with my gut, last time I did. Sadness mixed in with my emotions but I shook my head, clearing it. Lucas needed me and I promised him I wouldn't leave him.
Trembling, I forced my foot in front of me and began to walk forwards. I could hear my heart pounding loudly in my ears and my legs felt like they were chained to a hundred pound ball. My breathing short and sharp as I let my hand guide me, seeing leg my eyes were concentrated on the lantern.
Suddenly the lantern went out and fast heavy footsteps began to run my way. Biting my lip and swallowing the scream that nearly escaped, I dove into a small crevice that my hand felt. I pressed my back to the wall the best I could.
The footsteps slowed down and I heard the sound of chains being dragged. I held my breath when the sounds got closer and I kept it until they faded away. Letting out a relieved sigh I crawled out of my hiding place.
I grabbed the doorknob and realized it was cold. Confused, I placed my hand on the door and instantly pulled back. It was freezing but it was the only door down here. I turned the doorknob and open the door and was hit in the face with the icy temperature.
I breathed in slightly. Ice. I looked around, trying to adjust to the darkness when I stumbled over something. I brushed myself off and looked at what I stumbled over. I touched it lightly and dread filled my body.
It was warm and living and if I really focused on it, it was breathing! I strained my eyes to try and give the thing shape but it made a noise. A whimper. "Lucas?!" I whispered. "J-J-Jamie?" His voice was shaky and his teeth were chattering.
I grabbed what felt like his arm and lifted him up. He yelped, pulling back in pain cause a wave of guilt wash over me. "Sorry! Reach out to me with your hand, we need to get out here." I ordered. I grabbed his hand and walked briskly out of the room. It was silent expect Lucas's soft breathing.
I hurried to the crack in the wall and pulled Lucas's with me. My eyes had adjusted so I could see what happened to him.
A scar ran down his left eyes along with a bloody lip. He had a long cut that started from his right should down his arm, stopping a few inches from his wrist but it wasn't too deep. On his left leg was a gash that started at his thigh down to his knee. The cold must have numbed the pain the best it could.
I begin crying, hugging him. "This is all my fault," I whispered to myself as I held him. He gave a whimper but leaned his head on my shoulder. "I'm so so sorry Charlie." I whimpered. "Jamie? My name isn't Charlie." Lucas muttered.
