Mae's POV

I woke up to my stepfather banging my door.

"Get up you lazy bitch and make me some breakfast", he screamed.

I quickly got out of bed, checked the time and went to the kitchen, i made an omelette and put it on the table. He sat and asked for some water.

I brought a glass of water, as i was walking toward him i slipped and accidentally spilled a little bit on him.
He snatched the glass out of my hand and slammed it on the table.

"You can't do one thing right" , he screamed at my face.

I backed away, that seemed to have angered him more. He tightly grabbed my arm and pulled my hair backwards so that i was looking straight at his eyes. A tear escaped my eyes and i tried my best not to cry out loud from pain.

"If you ever back away from me again, the consequences won't be in your favour" he whispered.

As soon he let go of me, i scurried to my room, hurriedly got ready for school and left the house.

I reached school at time. As i was walking towards my locker i saw Caleb and he had a bruise on his face. I remembered yesterday's ordeal and realized how he must have gotten the bruise. Just as i reached my locker i saw the new guy, he smiled at me and gave me a little wave as he talked with the other two guys. I awkwardly smiled back.

I was getting my stuff from the locker as i realized that i don't even know his name. Maybe i can make a friend this once. He doesn't seem that bad.

I was walking to the class when i suddenly fell.I looked up and saw that it was Jenny who tripped me, I helped myself up .She grabbed my already bruised arm and dug her nails into it. I winced in pain. She came closer to my face and told me:

"Stay away from Jax, he is mine"

"Um ,who?" I asked confusedly.

"Don't act so dumb ,i just saw you giving him that flirtatious smile", she sneered.

I realized she must be talking about the new guy. I released my hand from her grip and left without giving her a response.

I went to my seat.The teacher came in but Jax was nowhere to be seen. Wait why do i care.

"Maybe because he has been nice to you", my conscience said.

The lesson started and after about 10 mins Jax and the other guys entered the class. Since they were late ,the teacher gave them detention.

Jax came and sat next to me and smiled. Why is he being nice to me.

The bell rang and i was packing my bag when my pencil case fell down,i got down to pick it up and at the same time Jax did so too. But i beat him to it and grabbed it, he suddenly scared me by grabbing my arm.

"How'd this happen?", He asked referring to my bruised arm.

"Um i-i just, i fell down ,yeah that's what happened", i stuttered.

Jax's POV

I asked her about her arm and the response which i got told me she was lying but i didn't press on it.

"Hey, Mae? Would you like to be with me and my friends during break and all? I noticed you're alone mostly.",I asked her.

"Um i-it's alright i-i wouldn't want t-to intrude",she answered.

"No no you wouldn't, i would really like it actually"

"Um well okay", she replied with a little smile.

"I'll walk you to your next class then, come on", i said as i grabbed her bag, she smiled in response.

As soon as we started walking through the hallway, her demeanor changed and it looked as if she was hiding from everyone.

"So see you at lunch then", i said as we reached the classroom and i handed over her bag.

Mae's POV

I went in to the classroom with a smile after Jax left.

Maybe I'll have friends now.

I took my usual spot and took out my stuff. The teacher gave us a lecture about doppler's effect but i couldn't pay much attention. I was still thinking about Jax.

As soon as the bell rang i went to the cafeteria. I looked around and saw Jax sitting at table with the other two guys.

Now i didn't feel so sure to sit with them, so i turned around. Just as i was about to leave the cafeteria, someone grabbed my wrist.

"Hey where are you going?"

I turned around to be met with Jax's confused face.

"I-I um i don't wanna be a bother to them", i replied as i referred to his friends.

"You won't be a bother"

I looked towards his friends and saw one of them waving at me with a smile and the other one stuffing his mouth with food.

Jax dragged me over to the table.

"Guys this is Mae, and Mae that is Brian and that's Connor"

"Wow, has anyone told you that you're really pretty", Brian said with his mouth filled with food.

Connor smacked his head and rolled his eyes.

"Has no one ever taught you manners ,dumbass"

I giggled at their goofiness and sat down next to Jax.

"So Mae how was your life before meeting us, i assume it must have been dull and unentertaining, but now every moment of your life will be exciting and fun", Brian said with a goofy smile while making weird hand motions.

I laughed in response and turned towards Jax and found him already looking at me with something close to adoration. I thought he might look away but he continued staring at me.

The boys continued making conversation with me while Jax remained quiet , whenever i glanced over him, i found him already looking at me.

What exactly does he see in me.
