Not receiving a reply when he closes the front door and calls out an "I'm home!" worries Chris only slightly. What worries him more is seeing his husband sitting on the couch and crying.

Chris hangs his keys by the door and rushes over to their brown couch, sitting down next to Darren and gripping his shoulders. "What happened?"

Darren looks up to face Chris. His eyes are slightly puffy but they're not very wet. He says, "Kaylie."

"What? Where is she?" Chris looks around as if their daughter will somehow appear.

"At Emma's house. She's fine."

"Then what's the matter?"

Darren leans into Chris' side, "Earlier she told me that we need to start buying her pads."

"So?" Chris questions. "She's a twelve-year-old girl; what did you think would happen?"

"You said it yourself: she's already twelve. She's growing up so fast."

"Dare," Chris laughs, "stop being such a drama queen. We still have six or seven years left."

"That's half her age, Chris! We've already used up two thirds of her years at home! It's like yesterday we were signing the adoption papers. Before you know it she'll be going off to college and getting married and having kids and becoming a grandma and-"

"Darren. Calm down. She just got her period; it's not the end of the world and it's definitely not the end of her time with us," Chris says and Darren stops rambling. "And hey," he adds, "when Kay has her own kids, you can try out all those Dad jokes that she hates on them."

Darren grins, "I can't wait. Well, I really can. I intend to wait at least a decade for that." He pales slightly, "Oh god, a decade. That's nothing!"

"That's a long time, honey. Now calm down and tell Kay that she should come home soon."

I have one more chapter that I'll post tomorrow. I wrote it in a notebook because my phone died and I'm too lazy to get it rn.
