It was 12 am, and I was alone.

Ok that's not true they were asleep, but I felt alone.

I found a staircase and followed it as far up as it would go. The last door opened throwing cool air in my face. It was a cold September night, there was a light breeze but the sky was clear. when I was younger I could name the constellations, now I am lucky if I can name the dipper. I guess that's what happens, life gets crazy and the stars don't make an effect. I remember why I learned the constellations, it was the only book in the ward that wasn't for toddlers.

Stars always comforted me. Even as a little kid. I think because of Frost. It was the street I was found on. The street had barely any light pollution so you could even see the farthest star. I was only on that street one other time. I was five years old with the first family I was fostered by. I remember it like it was yesterday...

"Hey, Ruby." his voice makes me jump out of my skin.

"Jacob. Oh my god, you scared me."

"Sorry."

"What's up? Is she alright?"

"I come up here to clear my head sometimes," he says sitting next to me. He rolls on to his back like how I was earlier and I join him. "What are you doing up here?"

"I couldn't sleep, we can't pay for the surgery and I don't know where we are going after. We can't go into the system, we'll be separated." I explain to him

"Don't worry about the money, in cases like yours as an orphan we will pay for it, the hospital will get good credit." He tells me. "We do have to have a social worker come get you when Meadows discharged."

"I know, It's your job." I rub my forehead. "They will try to keep the twins together but, I was in the system before, I have seen what it's done to families."

"Look, kid. I grew up in the system too. I didn't have anyone..."

"Stop trying to connect with or whatever." I sat up.

"Hey, I am just trying to help. I know how tough it can be."

"If you want to help us give us a place where we can all be together."

"What about my place?"

"No offence, but I don't think a bachelor pad is an appropriate place for kids."

"Well, those are your options." he pulled on the door to the stairs

"Jacob," I said, he turned his head. "Thank you."

"I'll sort it out for you." He told me and was gone before I could say anything. (ODP:12/11/17)
