I was lying in bed when I heard my phone go off.
My mother and father were having a "date night". It wasn't much of a date, since they were out with, like, 5 friends. My sister, Allison (Aly), was at summer camp. I refused to go, so I stayed home watching Netflix, eating Oreos, with the news on in the background. Nothing but the usual sun we get during July in Indiana. I'm Samara, by the way. Nothing but your ordinary 16 year old girl, shoulder length dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and not "Look at my ribs" body, I was eating Oreos, from the box. I can't tell you how many I ate, but I'm not overweight.
My phone went off. It was from my bestfriend/crush. He was bored and asked what I was doing. I texted back
" Nothing but the usual, wanna come over?"
He texted back almost immediately
"All ready on my way ;)"
He lives not to far away, but the roads go around this huge, weird park that I have only gone to when I was little. So a 5 minute drive turns into a 20 minute drive. I close my laptop, saving my place on the documentary I was watching. I consider putting away the Oreos, but I just put them on my bedside table. I get out our favorite board game, Parcheesi.
10 minutes later I hear a knock, then a door open. I see his arms as he hangs up his jacket. He comes over and plops himself down on the lounge chair that faces me, and smiles. "Hey Sammy," I replied with " Hi Jas." His name is Jasper, but we have nicknames for each other, mine is (obviously) Sammy, or Sam.
"What's up?" he asks me.
"Hangin' with you? Or am I not?"
He laughs " You're to good Sam"
Of course, like the idiot I am, I blush. I go grab the Oreos, and we start playing. It takes about 20 minutes until Jasper makes one of his avatars home. "Yes! I got you now Sam!" He exclaims. "I'm letting you win, Jasper." Which was a lie, and he knew it was one. " Course, you are," He said sarcastically. About 45 minutes later we finished, and he won. We stayed in my living room, watching the news. He asked if I was doing anything tomorrow, "No, of course not. Why?" I replied. "I don't know, can I stay the night?" he asked. " If you have clothes, then absolutely." I said this because 1) I was tired of him taking my clothes home the next day, and 2) I was almost positive he had clothes in his Jeep.
Jasper jumps up off his chair and laughs like a mad man (Which is a reason I fell for him) as he runs out the door to his Jeep. I put the game away, and turn off the TV. He walks in, and we just stand there, I have no clue why we stood there, but we did. He was the first to break the sudden silence, " I, uh, better go-" "Err, yeah you go change." He runs upstairs into the bathroom. I walk upstairs too, but I go into my bedroom.
I lay on my bed and pull my laptop out and wait for him to come out. He walks out in a tank-top and long blue fleece pants. Jasper comes and lays next to me, but not NEXT to me.
"What are you watching?" he asks
" A documentary on mummies and mythical stuff like that," I say
"Coo- Wait, why are you watching this?"
" Can I not? We can watch something else, there are other things we can watch," I say, confused
" No, it's just I never thought you liked that stuff," Jasper said
"Well, I don't-it's just- I don't know," I said
"It's ok, really. Calm down Samara." His voice was soothing now, another reason I fell for him.
I hadn't realized I was freaking out, clenching my fists. I got mad easily, sometimes without even noticing. We started watching the segment on unicorns. After the documentary,(it was about 1 AM) we agreed we both couldn't keep our eyes open, and started to get ready for bed. We both sleep on my bed, but not ,like, TOGTHER we spaced ourselves well, even though he would roll over right next to me while we were asleep.
We were settled and then he said " Samara?" His bright gray eyes looked right at me, "Yes, Jas?" I said.
"Can I tell you why I came over?"
"Because you missed me?"
He laughed lightly "No, that's not it."
What was he doing? "What's wrong?"
We both sat up, " You know how my mom has been acting weird? Well, she has been with this guy for a couple months..." He sighed, looking down, and it looked like he was crying. He sniffed, and continued without looking up " She told me they were engaged" My heart stopped for a couple seconds. His mom has always been... different. She can go out with at least 5 guys a month. I was surprised when I heard she was going steady with this guy. (If your wondering 'Where is his dad?' He's dead, died by cancer 4 years ago, gotta hate cancer) But I never thought she was going to marry again, especially so soon. "Oh- I - umm- I'm sorry"
"Yeah, just one more thing?"
"Of course," I said
"He abuses me, Sam," Jasper said quietly.
