Chapter 3 - The Pyramid
For the second time in a very short interval, Kevin Turner thought he might be dead. Surely, confronting a deadly skilled woman had been his last act of courage. But then again, he clearly had the sense of vision, because he could feel his unaccustomed eyes burning with the sun rays. In fact, now that he came to think about it, he must possess the sense of touch as well: he could definitely tell he was lying, his back pressed against a slightly prickling surface.
He rolled over to one side, in order to stop himself facing the sky directly. Finally being able to open his eyes, he saw that the surface he was stretched upon was actually green grass, and, as soon as his brain managed to adjust the focus of his sight completely, he could see further ... and then he leapt to his feet.
'Alright, let's get this over with. What do you want from me?' He was shouting at the back of the cloaked woman. She was locking a very large door, which apparently was the only way in and out an enormous hedge. The green barrier was five or six times taller than the pair of them put together.
Jumping over it might be a little tricky then.
'I must warn you. My father is a fully qualified sniper ... he shoots ... and kills ... and takes heads off!' The childish words left his lips before he could stop them. He was still feeling a lot dizzy; little dots of light sparkled before his eyes as a result of the speed with which he had raised from the floor. He rummaged his pockets after the phone; it was nowhere to be found.
The woman remained offensively unperturbed; her hair glowing – shockingly red – under the daylight. During a few seconds, Kevin watched it, hypnotized. She finished her work with a complex twirl across the surface of the door, turned on the spot and stared at him. Her white skin seemed to carry a pearly aura. Kevin had the funny impression that she might burst into flames at any moment. Nighttime appeared to have suited her far more naturally.
'Hello, Mr. Turner. My name is Stella Clark,' she said in a business-like tone.
'How – how do you know my name?' he asked suspiciously, recoiling a few inches.
Stella did not answer the question. Instead, she threw an object through the air in his direction. Kevin performed an uncertain catch and almost dropped his phone: she must have read his name in its settings.
'A closer look at you made it clear that you were not a threat ...' she started saying.
'I could be!' Kevin interrupted, a little offended.
'... And it is obvious you have nothing to do with Aurum's disappearance,' she resumed as though he had never spoken. 'So I brought you here. You shall answer my questions and I might respond to yours.'
A countless number of them crossed Kevin's mind. The concentration of unexplained events that had occurred in the last few hours was overwhelming. In such confusion, all he managed to do was to start with the simplest one.
'Where am I?'
'I told you I'd bring you here. Turn around and see for yourself.'
What the ...
A stone pyramid rose imposingly to the skies. The irregular grey rocks of its structure conferred a rustic quality to the construction without raising questions about its steadiness. It looked like it had been there since the beginning of time and could last indefinitely. A mahogany door marked the entrance, and it was accompanied by something Kevin had never seen in any other pyramid: windows. Two of them were large and rectangular, and stood on either side of the door. A stained glass triangle was placed in the center of the front face, high above the entrance; it was exactly like the Icon of the Pyroglyph, triangles within triangles, but here they were alternately colored in red, blue and yellow. The last window was at the very top of the pyramid; it was much smaller and circular, like an eye observing everything from up there.
