Chapter 6 - Under the golden light
Max, Levina and Nariko were the youngest knights of the Pyramid. All the bedrooms of the modern square building had been taken by the time they arrived, so the three of them slept in the ancient round building. Kevin was bound to share their tower because the last vacant room was also located in there.
The circular staircase in the middle of the library ascended to a hall full of large paintings depicting notorious individuals. Each one was accompanied by a plaque, which exhibited one or more inspiring phrases elaborated by the famous figure, written in golden letters.
Kevin recognized a few scientists and philosophers; he remembered the picture of Isaac Newton holding a prism, which decomposed white light into the seven colors of the rainbow; he was also familiar with the busts of bearded Aristotle and Darwin, and knew very well the only real photograph in the gallery, which showed Albert Einstein and his outstretched tongue. In a very quick tour, Kevin selected his favorite quotes.
'Imagination is more important than knowledge'
'A mind which opens up to a new idea never returns to its original size'
'Today's problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them'
-Albert Einstein-
'If we want to examine the truth, we must question everything we know'
'I think, therefore I am'
'In order to improve the mind, we ought less to learn than to contemplate'
-Rene Descartes-
'If I have seen further, it was by standing upon the shoulders of giants'
'Truth is ever to be found in simplicity and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things'
-Isaac Newton-
The gallery wasn't the only room on the second floor. There were two doors to leave the place and they used the one on the left-hand side to reach a long corridor, which provided access the dormitories. Kevin's bedroom was at the very end of this hallway; it was a relatively large chamber, with wooden floor and stone walls. The furniture was basically composed of a four-poster bed, a nightstand, a mahogany wardrobe and a desk with a chair. A total of four windows offered excellent views to the grounds from different angles.
'I love it!' approved Kevin, and his voice echoed up and down the room.
'Yes, the only thing is ... it's empty,' observed Levina. 'Like it's been missing life.'
Indeed, the furniture occupied a very small portion of the total area. They could easily jog around the place.
'Good thing there's a new Knight around!' Kevin said; he was starting to feel home.
During the rest of the day, Kevin was able to explore the buildings and grounds a little further. There was a game room with a fireplace, a chessboard and a ping pong table on the other side of the long corridor. A trapdoor in the gallery ceiling took them to an observatory, full of telescopes pointing to the sky; some were located indoors, by the windows, others stood on a circular balcony.
For some reason, when they climbed down the ladder, back to the gallery, Max and Levina plainly avoided going through the door to the right, so the three of them headed for the square building, where they used the elevator of the Algorithm Central to visit the gigantic lab, which housed high tech devices and complex glassware for chemical experiments, all within clean white walls.
