Alyssa's pov

The bell rings so Lou, Liam, and I meet back up with the others. They don't ask questions about our whereabouts. We separate when we have to go to our lockers, but we'll see each other in like two minutes. I open my locker and grab everything I know I'll need. I glance in the little mirror I hung up on my locker door. My breath catches in my throat and a gasp escapes. Liam is standing at the locker right next to mine. Are we always going to be near each other? For some unknown reason, I like the idea of that. I feel drawn to him like I have with no one ever before. It's unexplainable and I don't understand it one bit.

"I wonder if this was Mrs. M's doing," I say to him. He looks up, surprised. When he doesn't respond, I continue, "I mean I know she wants me to show you around, but putting our lockers next to each other's is going a little overboard. Don't you think?"

It's cute watching him fumble for words. Finally he speaks. "This wasn't Mrs. Montgomery's 'doing'. This was my locker before she asked you to show me around."

"Ah, okay. Good. It wouldn't surprise if this was her fault though. She's prone to over doing things. It's one of the reasons why she's my favorite teacher." I shake my head at the thought of Mrs. Montgomery asking the principal to put our lockers next to each other.

Liam laughs. The sound is like music to my ears. Why the hell do I find this mysterious boy so damn attracting? Sure, he's hot, but I feel drawn to him for a whole other reason. And I'm going to find out what it is. "I can see why you're one of her favourites, too," he says.

The comment surprises me. How did he notice that on the first day he was here? I am about to ask him what he meant, but the warning bell sounds off and we have to rush to class. I think about bringing it back up in history, but I know my attention is already going to be held. Or not...

In class while Mrs. M talks, I decide to pass Liam a note. I hope he will reply and it doesn't seem to weird. I honestly don't care. When I get curious, I have to find out.

I write: What did you mean? I pass it to Liam. He glances at the paper and slides it over to him. As he reads it I look at the teacher to make sure she isn't watching us. Liam writes a quick response and hands the note back to me.

It reads: What did I mean when?

I respond with: At our lockers. You said you understood why Mrs. M considered me a favorite. What did you mean by that?

I just meant that you're likeable. I see the way teachers act towards you. They all like you. I think it's because you have good grades and you're respectful. Am I wrong?

Not exactly. Do you really think I'm likeable?

Yeah. I consider you as a friend. And I don't really like people. Maybe you're just special. Thanks for that.

For what exactly?

Being my friend. For making me not have another lonely, antisocial year again. I appreciate it. I want you to know that.

You're welcome, Liam. You can trust me, you know. I'll be there for you, no matter what.

I know.

I tuck the piece of paper away into my pocket. He called me special. I try not to dwell on that, but I fail. I'm special. He is the first person to ever call me that. Of course Lou has called me many sweet things, some made me even blush, but never special. And I have to admit I like being special. Especially to Liam Payne, the mystery boy. I catch his gaze. My green eyes stare into his deep brown ones. We hold each other's gaze without blinking or moving. I grin and he returns the epression. My heart skips. I love his smile. He's just... well, unexplainable. In the best way possible of course.

I wonder if we just grew closer because of one note. I smile at the thought of that. He was a mystery from the beginning and I'm finally cracking the case. Bella pokes me and when I look at her she gives me a questioning look. I just simply shrug and pay attention to Mrs. M. I feel bad because I have no idea what she is talking about. Oh well, I'll ask someone later.

After class, Liam and I walk to our lockers. I still think it's strange that we are right next to one another. I'm not complaining, don't get me wrong, but it's still bizarre. I close the door of my locker and the annoying noise rings in my ears. Thankfully, Liam shuts his queitly. His face shows he's amused about something and I grow curious as to what that something is. The tight smile Liam shows makes me smile too. I can't help it. I'm... different around him.

Before we reach our next class I let my curiosity take over me. "What's so funny?" I ask.

"I'm not laughing," Liam remarks. His comment makes him chuckle though.

I roll me eyes. He's getting used to the group's sarcasm even though he's only been around us for a short amount of time. "Well now you are," I mumble. "I was just wondering because you had this amused expression."

Confusion masked his amusement. "I don't know what you're talking about," he lies.

"You're a terrible liar, Payne. Tell me! Why were you so gleeful?" I'm practically begging.

"Why do you want to know?"

"I'm curious."

"Haven't you ever heard the expression 'Curiosity killed the cat'?"

"Of course I have. I don't live under a rock, you know. But that doesn't apply to me," I say confidently.

"Oh? And why not?"

"Well, I'm not a cat."

Liam bursts out into laughter. Once he finishes he gives me a meaning look. "Fine, I'll tell you. Only because you gave me a good laugh and I haven't had one of those in a long time." He takes a deep breath. "I was amused because I don't think your boyfriend likes us hanging out or talking."
