Chapter 1

What is that sound? There is a low whimpering noise come from the left of me. Or maybe it's a moan. I can't see it. My eyes are still closed tight. By the way my body feels it's about five in the morning.

The whimper or moan or whatever it is starts again. What is that? I really don't want to get out of bed but the noise is starting to worry me and it keeps getting louder. I sit up and swing my legs over the edge of the bed. I keep my eyes closed though. I don't want to open them because I know the room will be extremely bright at this time. The sun is just peeking over the horizon but it shines directly in to my bedroom window making the room unbearable .

More whimpering. Now I have to open my eyes now. The noise is getting louder and louder. I slowly, very slowly, inch my eyes open trying not to blind myself. I think it is making it worse though.

The room is empty as usual. Our very few things scattered here and there all over the room. My bed, Hunter's bed, a cheesier drawer with our clothes in it. We have no real personal belongings. I have a lucky necklace and I think hunter has a little toy truck but he keeps it hidden. I think he hides it because he feels someone will take the only thing he has away. I don't blame him though. I have hidden my necklace too.

I hear the whimpering again. I whip my head around. Now I can see where it is coming from. It's coming from poor little Hunter. He must be having a bad dream or another vision. Most likely the vision. That is the only thing that makes him cry in his sleep like this.

He has visions all the time now. They are more and more frequently now. It's complete torture for him. I wish so badly that I could make them stop.

He is what the people of our country, Sahannah, call a 'Special Child'. These Special Children are kids with extraordinary powers. It's very fascinating actually but most people resent the Special Children because everyone blames them for almost making the human race extinct. In my opinion it was everyone's fault.

There was a rebellion and the people with powers like the Special Children tried to over power our government. Well not over power them but the people with the powers wanted to be represented in the government. There was a huge war. It was horrible and very fatal. Some of the adults call it by the name of World War 3. I don't exactly understand this because World War 2 was over 10,000 years ago and in World War 2 there were only about one eighth of the casualties. In my opinion there were many other wars that I would consider a third world war but oh well. The war's proper name is the Special Childs War. Anyways, the Special People bombed many of the main cities. There main camps were bombed back. It went on like that for almost 3 years. The war finally ended when the people who call themselves 'The Great Powers' rose up and enslaved the leaders of the Specials.

Now twice every year they pull four children, between the grades of four and twelve, out of school. They take them from each of the four schools in Sahanna. That makes 16 children that are tested for powers. It is supposed to be a great honor to get picked but it really isn't. I hope Hunter never gets tested because if he does I know he will test positive. Which would be horrible because if you test positive you join the great powers or you die. They are so scared of the specials that they are killing them if they don't surrender.

I can tell Hunter's vision is over because the noise he is making abruptly stops. I slightly shake his arm and his eyes fly open. "How did you sleep honey?" He doesn't respond he just looks at me. Tears begin to fill his eyes. Whatever he saw was about me. I can tell by the way he is looking at me. It was not pleasant what he saw. I let him cry for a couple of minutes. The tears are coming down in streams from his eyes but he does not take his eyes off of my face.
