Chapter 4
I wish he would say something. The silence is allowing my brain to run wild again. All I am really thinking of is what is to come of Navy. I know he will never join the Great Powers so therefore he is going to die and I am going to be forced to watch them slaughter him in front of the whole nation.
"Come on Cedar. We're going on a little field trip," In say breaking the defining silence. "Where are we going," he asks a little suspicious. "Come On!" I jump up and grab his hand. I half drag him to the back wall of the train. I stop and turn to him. A huge smile breaks out across my face.
"Are you hungry?"
"Why are we here?"
"You didn't answer my question."
"Well you haven't answered my others."
"Because you would understand if you would answer mine!"
"Okay! Sure I'm hungry."
That was easier than I thought. I touch the wall and it slides away. I peer in at the empty kitchen. It is still brightly lit. He looks in. "So we are cooking," he asks. "Yep," I say. I am so excited to use the nice toys they have. "Well I would tell you no not to but I don't think you would listen," he says with a little smile. "Well you would be right," I tell him.
He looks a little uneasy but he follows me into the kitchen. "Can you make something fast?" He is definitely worried about getting caught. I'm not. They are not going to kill me till after I am tested so I figure I'm good for another couple of days. Cedar ask questions but I don't ever really respond I just nod. I run to the refrigerator and grab heavy cream. Then I run to the pantry and find sugar.
"What can you make with that," he asks but I am in cook mode so I am not going to respond. I find a bowl and pour the cream and sugar in. I don't have to measure I have done this too many time to have to. I whisk it for about a minute then put the tip of my finger in the white liquid. Some comes on to my finger and I lick it off. It's perfect but I want more of a flavor to it.
"Do you like chocolate," I ask. He pauses for a moment and looks down, "Well I've never really tried it." He. Has. Never. Tried. Chocolate. I think that's a crime against food! I dig out coca powder and pour a good amount into my white liquid.
I whisk it hard and fast. It slowly swirls in to a mixture of white and brown. Then it completely turns chocolate brown. I keep whisking and whisking and whisking. It stiffens up and becomes fluffy. It is like clouds of chocolate. I dip my finger in the now brown fluff and a small bit comes out on to my finger. I hold it up near Cedar's face.
"Try it." He stares at me for a long second. He grabs my finger and holds it still. Then sticks my finger in his mouth. He pulls away so he can actually taste the concoction. "That's really good," he exclaims. "I knew you would like it," I tell him while handing a spoon from a nearby drawer. "Dig in."
"Wait," he says. I place my spoon on the reflective counter top and look up at him.
"It's my turn," he says.
"Your turn for what?"
He smiles, "My turn to take you on a field trip."
This is the first time he has said something to me that wasn't a question or praise. This is also the first time I have ever actually smiled at me. He has a warm cheerful smile. It's the kind of smile that makes you want to smile back.
"Okay! Show me the way," I say not really caring where he takes me.
"First I need you to go put on a jacket or a robe because you may get a little cold. Then meet me back in the main room in there," he instructs. I don't object I just make my way back to my room.
