Chapter 3.

Song of the day: Alone- I Prevail

I woke up to the sound of my mother leaving. I didn't even know she came home. I took Maya home about an hour ago and came back to get more sleep. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and went downstairs. My mom was moving frantically.

"What the hell are you doing?" I asked her. She was making so much damn noise. "I'm late for a business meeting. We're taking a trip in a few days and we have to plan it out. Don't have anyone over or else I'll ground you for a month." And with that, she was gone.

I wasn't gonna listen to her, obviously. I quickly went to take a shower and put on some lazy clothes. Just a loose black tank top and some sweatpants. I tied my hair in a messy bun and grabbed some orange juice. Then my doorbell rang.

I opened it and had to adjust to the light. Once my eyes adjusted, I saw Oliver walking past me and into my house. It was so fucking early. Why was he here already? "Oliver, it's 7 in the morning. Why are you here already?" I said closing the door.

I turned around and saw he had a pained look on his face. "Oliver, what's wrong?" I went up to him tears brimmed his eyes. "My mom left." He said almost inaudible. I didn't even think twice. I pulled him in for a hug and he cried into my neck.

I didn't like Oliver but I understand this all too well. I know about the relationship he had with his parents. His dad was an abusive drunk, much like my mom. His mom was sweet, but they argued way too much.

After for seemed like forever, Oliver pulled away and wiped his tears. "She took my brother with her. She left me with that asshole." His sadness was replaced with anger. "I trusted her! And she left me with him!" I flinched at his words.

I nodded my head. "I understand." I whispered. He looked down at me and wiped away my tears. Fuck, I didn't even know I was crying. He grabbed my hand and pulled me over to the couch.

We both sat there in comfortable silence for a few moments. Then he finally spoke up. "We should start this dumb project" he mumbled. "Yeah. My laptop is in my room." He followed me upstairs and into my room. I sat on my bed and he closed the door.

He sat on my bed criss cross facing me. I opened my laptop and began my boring research. Oliver pulled out a notebook and a library book and began taking notes. Then I noticed that he was looking at me. I sighed and looked at him.

"What?" I said. He laughed lightly and shook his head. "Nothing. It's just, what's your grade in Mr. Brenners class?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Why are you asking?" I had a pretty good grade in that class. "A." I mumbled. His smile got bigger.

"I bet you have an F." I said while typing on my laptop. "A plus." He said matter-of-factly. I rolled my eyes. "Whatever. Why are you asking?" He shrugged his shoulders. "We don't really need to do this stupid project. Our grades will be fine." Is he fucking serious?

"Are you fucking serious, Oliver? I don't wanna jeopardize my good grade, and you shouldn't either." Me and Oliver were straight A students surprisingly. He's being unbelievable. I shook my head. "No way." Then he closed my laptop.

"What the fuck Oliver!" What the hell is his problem? "Can we just.. take a break?" His voice softened. I sighed and ran my hands through my hair. "Fine." I mumbled. Oliver scooted closer to me. Maybe a little too close. I scooted back and laid down on my bed.

I stared up at the ceiling. "Veronica?" Oliver said, pulling me away from my thoughts. "What?" I said. He was quiet for a moment. I sat up and he was looking down. "What was it like when your dad left?" All those feelings came back from when he left.

"It was like a part of me left with him. I was broken, and I felt betrayed." I felt tears threatening to spill. Oliver scooted closer to me and put his arm around me. I wanted to push him away but I didn't. I was too hurt and I knew he felt my pain.
