"C'mon! You're walking to slow for my liking!" Shouted Jay who was four tail lengths in front of her.
"Ugh! Hold on! I like to take my tine with things!" She yelled, sprinting up beside the light brown tabby. "Follow me. The alley isn't much farther. I believe it's just around this corner." She said, pointing her tail to the left as they rounded the corner of the walkway.
"Well, today was an interesting day for the both of us, wasn't it, gorgeous?" Jay said smiling like the imbecile he was.
Darkpaw smiled back. "Yeah.. I've had many days like this. Trust me, i've seen worse." She said, shuttering at the memories.
Jay nudged her affectionately. "Hey, don't get yourself all worked up. I know what happened to ya' back then. That was the past. Live up to your future." He said, green eyes staring into her amber eyes softly.
"Thanks Jay. You're not as bad as Tess described you cats as."
Jay looked down. "I'm the only one that's not like how Tess might've described our gang of rogues. The four other, they're just as nasty and dangerous as she probably told you they were. All these scars, they're from them, kicking me around, talking twoleg rubbish about me, and all those other horrible things they did to entertain themselves and hurt me."
Darkpaw looked at him with sympathy.
"It's alright. I'll be here for you if they ever come back." She murmured to her new friend.
Jay looked surprised for a second then, softened his green gaze. "And I'll be here for ya' too, Darkpaw." He said, pawing at her ear gently.
A few minutes passed till the two cane across the alley.
"Well, here we are!" Exclaimed Darkpaw. "Can't wait to see Tess..." She added.
Jay nodded. "Ya' me too. I'm so excited to see her reaction..." He meowed, rolling his eyes.
Darkpaw gave a soft laugh as they turned the corner into the dark, narrow alleyway.
"Ah, there you are, Darkpaw! I've been waiting for you to come-." She stopped as she noticed Jay standing, slouched over beside Darkpaw. Her fur bristled up and her lips curled back showing her old, yellow, broken teeth. "Darkpaw, who's this?" She said, glaring her cold, blue eyes at Jay.
"Erm... Tess, this is Jay." She managed to say before Tess hissed and her tail began lashing back and forth.
She unsheathe her claws and growled. "I don't want that miscreant in my alley!" She hissed.
Jay broke in, trying to defend himself. "If you'd let me explain, I could tell you why I'm here!" He snapped. Tess stopped, but continued to glare at him. "I was with that rogue Rocky when Darkpaw approached us. Rocky attacked her, but I fought off Rocky and saved your clumsy shecat friend here from dying." He said, looking beside him at Darkpaw, giving her a wink.
Tess blinked in astonishment and looked at Darkpaw in suspicion. "Is this true, Darkpaw? Did this rogue save your life?" She asked.
Darkpaw nodded. "Yes." She meowed. "And, we've already become close friends. Even if you don't let him stay, you can't keep the two of us from seeing each other outside the alley." She added.
Tess rolled her eyes as she stared at the two friends. "Fine, fine he can stay. But if me causes any trouble or tries stealing any of our food, he's gettin' thrown to the dogs." She hissed, turning away from the two. "Goodnight." She grumbled before flopping down in her best before drifting off to sleep.
The two turned towards each other and stared in shock for a few moments. Finally, Jay spoke.
"At least I can stay." He said, shrugging.
Darkpaw purred. "Yeah, Come here. I wanna show you something." She whispered, walking quietly over to the stack of boxes, leading up to the rooftop, trying not to wake Tess in the process. Jay looked confused, but did as she said and followed anyway. The two reached up to the top and stared up at the sky, lit by a quarter moon. The stars that shined above reflected in their eyes like a mirror, speckled with twinkling lights.
"It's beautiful up here, Darkpaw. I've never seen a view of twolegplace like this." He whispered.
Darkpaw dipped her head. "Yeah. I come up here to think when I'm feeling troubled." She said sighing.
Jay looked at her, eyes full of worry. "What would make you feel that way Darkpaw?" He asked questionably.
Darkpaw shrugged and lay her body down on the ground. "I just feel out of place in this world sometimes with all the things that I've been through, you know?" She said, voice trembling as she set her head on her small white paws.
Jay looked at her sympathetically and shuffled closer to her side. "Life hasn't been perfect for both of us then, eh? Well, sometimes I feel the same way, but you just have to fight through it no matter what and at some point, you are gonna get past it and be happy. but whatever happens I love you." He murmured. "You're one of my best friends. Well, my only friend. I'll never leave your side. I'm here for ya" he said, smiling.
Darkpaw smiled back. Thanks. You're literally the only cat who's every told me that."
Jay stared at her in wonder and amazement. "What the heck? Everyone should tell you that! Just believe me it WILL get better. It will..." He whispered in her ear.
Darkpaw smiled again, letting a tear glow down her face. "Thanks Jay." She managed to stutter out.
"Yep.." Jay said. He looked at her in the eyes. The two friends looked at each other for a few minutes before Jay spoke again.
"Love you." He said in a whisper, resting his head on her shoulder as two stared out at the night until they both nodded off to sleep.
