Kaida

I looked out of the open window and thanked the cool night breeze that caressed my cheeks with its icy fingers; I gave a sigh of relief. A pair of warm arms slid around my waist, and I smiled at his calming presence, somehow James always knew the right thing to do.

“How are you feeling?” his voice whispered in my ear, calm and collective as always.

“Yeah, yeah I’m…better,” I shuffled the hoodie he leant me (which was just a bit too big) hoping that he didn’t suspect anything. He slowly turned me round so we were facing each other, titling my chin gently upwards and planting a slow sweet kiss onto my lips. I felt a smile creep across my face as the kiss I’d felt so many times before deepened, but this time something was different. Something was holding me back. I knew he sensed it because he drew away from me as quickly as a gunfire shot.

“What?” he sighed, an edge clinging to his voice.

“Nothing,” I whimpered in reply, staring into his bright golden eyes.

He shook his head slowly, closed his eyes and drew a deep breath. He knew something was up; I bit my lip nervously waiting for him to speak.

“Is it because of what I did to him? You know I didn’t mean him any harm, don’t you?” he questioned. What was he on about? He must’ve known from the look on my face that I was confused.

“He didn’t tell you, Emery, I mean?”

“Tell me what?”

“That I, well, I sort of went at him,” he blushed, grinning sheepishly. A pang of anger throbbed in my chest.

“WHAT? Why the hell is it always you that has to start the fights around here?” I glared at him, trying to control the anger that threatened to take over my body.

“I, I just wanted him to know who was boss, that’s-”

“Boss? Boss of who, me? Who do you think you are?” I hated the way he thought he could possess me.

“Boss? I didn’t mean it like that, babe, seriously I didn’t-”

“Don’t you babe me, I hate it when you call me that!” it was then that I saw the glare of anger in his eyes, making me want to run and hide.

“Why can’t you see that I love you Kaida? I just wanted him to know his place with you and me, make sure that he doesn’t try and steal you away-“

“Steal me away? No James, you just take every opportunity possible to flaunt your so-called ‘abilities’ around! Well guess what, the whole world does not revolve around you,” I jabbed my finger into his firm chest which he caught and softly matched up our palms before linking his fingers with mine.

He sighed again and I saw his eyes soften.

“I’m sorry baby; I didn’t think you would take it so personally.”

I laughed.

“Me, take it personally, who do you think I am?” but I knew he could see the sadness that lingered in my eyes.

I made my way into the kitchen and opened the top cupboard, revealing a huge stack of cereals. I picked out any random one and poured its contents into a bowl, before piling milk on top of it. Wearily I led my bowl to one of the comfy couches and sunk into its cushiony depths. I could feel my eyelids drooping, the stress of last night had clearly taken its toll; I was still wearing James’ baggy jumper, I had decided to stay there for the rest of the night, not wanting to bump into Emery. The ticking of the grandfather clock subdued my restless mind, it was 6am. Jeesh, I think I’m coming down with something.

I finished my cereal and placed the empty bowl in the sink. Making sure that no-one was coming, I checked my mark. It seemed to sparkle, its colour more vibrant than last night and although it pained me to see it, it was also beautiful. Carefully I traced the pattern of the rose with my finger, a shiver creeping down my back.

“Where did you go last night?” a soft voice whispered across the room. I turned to see Arwen running her hand through her tousled hair, looking radiant as ever.

“I slept with James.”

Her eyes opened in shock and she rushed towards me.

“You mean, you mean you did it, you finally lost it to him,” she grinned childishly.

“Huh?” and then it dawned on me, “Oh, no, no no no I didn’t sleep with him, Arwen!”

“Oh,” her smile faded into a solemn frown.

“Seriously, you think I’d go and lose my virginity after what happened last night?” I stated.

“Well, no I didn’t but-“she paused, her eyes deftly scanned the room before continuing, “How is it?”

“Beautiful, really stupidly beautiful…”I uncovered the mark and heard her gasp.

“Oh-Kay it’s, it’s-“

“Bad?”

She looked at me fondly before replying, “Yep it’s pretty bad.”

“Bad doesn’t even cover it,” I said before covering the symbol and heading up the stairs to my room with Arwen trailing behind.
