Kaida

Usually vampires, or creatures similar to them, are presented as nocturnal but the strange thing about our species is that we are actually afraid of the dark. We don’t burn up in the sun or anything like that, but for some reason the night is not really our cup of tea.

It was late, around 5 minutes to 12, before I finished recalling the events to Arwen. Her face expressed shock when I told her about the tail incident.

“Holy crap Kay, how could you have been so stupid?”

“It’s not my fault that my tail has to be cooped up 24/7 in my jeans, sometimes it wants a bit of fresh air,” my tail swished with annoyance. This was one of the only times I could free it from its tight bonds. I moved from my bed to the open window and let the air tickle my face. It was completely dark outside, apart from the dazzling lamps which hung in the willow tree just outside the window. It was such a pretty sight. And that’s when I heard the scream.

“Kay…w-what was that?” Arwen joined me by the window; I felt her whole body shaking.

“I don’t know Arwen…maybe we should check it out?”

“WHAT? Are you mad Kaida? Who knows what’s out there,” I stared at her.

“It doesn’t matter, what if someone’s hurt? We need to help and fast.”

She looked at me as if I was bonkers but went to the bedside cabinet and retrieved the rope that we kept safe just in case there was ever an emergency, and this was one of them. She handed it to me and I began to tie a knot around my bed post. Making sure it was secure I threw the rope through the window before carefully lowering myself down too. As soon as I reached the bottom I contacted Arwen with my mind, ok now it’s your turn. I felt her anxiety as she too began her descent to the bottom. She reached the bottom and fell into my arms.

“Hey, I’ve got your back,” I smiled confidently at her, she returned it weakly. I held out my hand which she took almost immediately.

“Check your energy stores Arwen, we need to be ready…just in case,” she nodded and closed her eyes. I felt around for my own, it was completely full thanks to that bottle of blood. Arwen sighed with relief; her own stock must be full. I pulled a few threads of the energy from the ball so I was ready for any attack. With our hands linked we trekked through the darkness, our hearts racing, our only light coming from the magnificent tree.

What was that? Arwen’s voice filtered through my head.

I don’t know, the moan sounded again. Something or someone was in pain. I tightened my grip on Arwen’s hand and led her forward.

The scent of fresh blood hit me.

Checking that the coast was clear I moved us out into the open to see a horrific sight. A boy no older than 12 was lying on the floor surrounded in a pool of blood. A moan escaped his lips for the third time. I loosened my grip from Arwen and made my way forward.

Be careful, her voice was so quiet compared to the beating of my heart.

I approached the boy, and it was then that I wanted to close my eyes. It was ghastly. The boy’s eyes had rolled back into their sockets and tears of blood rolled down his pale cheeks. His tail had been torn from is fragile body and lay beside him, a pale baby blue. Blood gushed from the open wound in his back. He kept repeating the same word over and over again.
