“Lauren” the familiar voice called out.

Lauren swiped the drool that was forming at her mouth with the back of her hand, forcing her eyes open to see who was now in front of her. Her Mother the one person she had dreaded seeing, this was the first time she had ever let loose and drank to the point where she was incapable of carrying herself on her own two feet. Clara Lauren’s mom took Lauren from Seth’s arms and immediately told him to get out and never show his face or be in close distance to her daughter ever again.

As soon as Seth had left the house, Clara took Lauren into the kitchen and handed her a hot cup of coffee so she could sober up and they could have a proper conversation without the drunken confusion.

A few hours passed and Clara and Lauren were still sat in the same position as before, Lauren somewhat sobering up from the state she was in earlier. Lauren knew there was going to be huge consequences and she was going to have to give up sacrifices to please her mom who was evidently not pleased that her daughter would even come close to doing something like this. In Clara’s eyes Lauren was always the “perfect” one of the family, who had a clean image when it came to situations like these, not once ever had she been in trouble at home or school before. This was a big shocker to her and also an eye opener that Lauren had lost track of her-self. The two of them talked for a few hours about what had taken place tonight and how Lauren wouldn’t be able to see Seth anymore and that Clara was going to sign Lauren up for a few activities in and out of school. After a tired discussion of Lauren’s behaviour they both headed to bed, preparing themselves for the following day.

Clara entered her daughter’s room, pulling the blinds open to let the bright lit sun shine through the window.

Lauren groaned holding her pounding head in her hands, herself still recovering from her awful night.

“Sorry, I forgot” Clara said softly, walking closer to Lauren sitting herself on the wooden ledge of the bed. “I thought I should let you know that I kept to my word and I’ve signed you up to various activities, they haven’t been easy to get in a matter of only a few hours”

Lauren nodded completely understanding that she was going to have to do this to win back her mom’s trust. “What are they?”

“Well of course you have to keep up with your grades at school, so I have arranged for you to attend after school study and also the one I think you’ll like the most is I have signed you up to a student exchange programme, where a girl or boy will be visiting us from another part of the world or perhaps this country, they will be coming in three weeks and stay with us until the end of summer, so from three weeks until then they will also be attending school with you. I want you to make sure you will show whoever it may be staying with us a good time and have them know they are very welcome in our home.”

Lauren wasn’t sure of this whole exchange thing but she knew it wasn’t her decision to say she didn’t want to do it, so she just agreed. “Do we know who they are?” she asked.

Clara shook her head “No, you don’t know until the day they arrive, I really hope you learn from this Lauren, and also that you agree to actually get to know the person who is going to be staying with us.”

“Did you tell Dad about what happened last night?” Lauren asked her mom.

“No, I’m not going to bother him with something that you are going to make up for plus it will just start unwanted arguments in the family and we don’t need that right now, especially with him being stressed and all the upcoming issues at work” Clara explained. “Now, get changed and come downstairs so we can think of some activities we can plan when the exchange student is over.”

From that Clara stood up, smiling at Lauren quickly before exiting the room.

Lauren rolled over onto her side reaching her hand over to her bed side table to grab her phone, she clicked the home button and seen a few texts from her boyfriend.

Can we meet?

She read, taking her a few minutes to decide if she should reply or not. She did.

Tomorrow. She replied.

Lauren locked her phone and placed it back onto the bed side table where it once was before. She kicked off the covers that were on top of her and quickly stood up, yawning a few times before exiting her room and making her way downstairs.
