Prologue

I sat on the top of the old-fashioned stairs, curled up in a ball to cover my bruised face. I don't remember where it was from, however daddy said it was an accident. I listened through the railings, peering down only to see my parents feet. I got shivers up my spine whenever I heard my mother cry of pain and anger, and hiding under my pillow didn't solve any problems. I turned to look at the wall in front of me, trying to regain focus of my exhausted eyes. I tried to touch my bruise under my light pink blushed cheeks, and I winced at the pain shriveling up my face. My mother screamed and my eyes shot open like a gunshot, and re-positioned myself up a stair. My knees were on the upstairs floor, I slowly tilted my head down. I saw my mother, with her long blonde hair, collapsed on the floor. Before my brain could react, I let out of shriek of horror, as I watched a cut on my mothers head pool out with blood. She yelled something to me, but the horror blocked any form of hearing. I tried to stand up as fast as my undeveloped arms can hold me, but I slipped on my night gown, causing me to fall down the flight of stairs. I fell down the stairs and the slow reaction of pain dwelled up in my body. I slowly fluttered my eyes open, only to see my dad holding an object in his hand.

"Don't you dare touch her!" A weak voiced murmured in the background. My vision was blurred, and I felt the world was shaking me like a rag-doll. I let out a little whimper, but it was no match to the loud rumble of my dads voice. His face was boiling of red lava, and just when I think he might explode he whips the object in hands across the room shattering the mirror near our front door.

He is slamming his fists into the wall, and I realized this could be my only escape of it all. I call my mothers name, who was on her feet rushing towards me and I fell into her arms. She squeezed me tightly and rushed me upstiars to my bedroom. I began to react like every five year old would when they were scared. I sobbed as my mother wipped my tears as she lay on my little matress. She hushed me, and began to sing the tune to my favourite lullaby:

"The morning sun carries away the night

The dreams and nightmares are gone, all the remaining is the new day

We hold each otber knowing the light bring safe and warmth

Sunlight flows like water of a stream though hearts and souls

We share our love because we know the night will come"

I smiled slightly, and my mother smiled back to me. She kissed my forehead like she always did and walked to the door. I watched her leave, slowly watching the light of the hall fade as the door closed. I am Reese Lawerance, and my life will never be like yours.
