Chapter 2 - First Day Out
Walking deeper in the library, I lead Levi to the secret pathway, which I know for sure, was there.
It may be a building in another dimension but if this truly is a copy of my world's library, then I can be certain that the passage I use to sneak in at midnight is here as well.
"We're almost there." I say to Levi who is right behind me.
"Have you been to this place before? You seem to know this building well." He replied with a question, which much to my surprise, came later than I thought.
"In my world, this building was my safe haven. Although in this world, it seems to be abandoned." I answer as I make one last turn to the left.
"Wait, so there is an exact copy of this building in your dimension too?" He asked rather bewildered.
Reaching an old chipped down door, I carefully turn the knob and reveal a staircase. "Get in, quick." I widen the opening for him to fit in and quickly shut the door behind him. We never know what surprises this world has to show, the people chasing him might come barging in if we don't make haste.
"Follow me." I stated and went down the stairs with him in tow.
"Hey weirdo, I asked you a question." Levi said as he kept his pace.
"Huh? Oh, sorry I wasn't listening." I say but keep my eyes fixated on the direction below. "Watch your step, there's a crack."
Following my warning, he stuck himself on the other side of the staircase until I said it was okay.
It's pitch black in here so I had to rely on the number of steps I took and the candle-holders on the wall.
Let's see, after the thirtieth step, a candle-holder should be positioned right above it.
Confirming with my senses, I then turned the candle-holder to the right until it was lined horizontally. Seconds after, another door opened and this time, it had light on the other side.
Levi and I go through the door and I lock it from the inside.
Here, we stand in a narrow hallway with dimly lit lightbulbs.
"Rest. Let your eyes adjust." I turn to instruct Levi but he was already glaring at me.
"What?" I asked, questioning his odd behavior.
"Is there an exact copy of this building in your world too?" He asked the same question I subconsciously ignored awhile ago.
"Too? You mean you have one in your world?" I ask, eyes wide in disbelief.
He nodded and said, "I used to get a glimpse of this building from my room's window. I thought it was just coincidence, but I guess not."
From his statement, I remember that Levi was locked up in his room his whole life.
I remained silent and thought for a while.
"What do you think this means?" Levi asked, more curious than he already was.
"How should I know? I'm in the same boat you're in." I shrug as I gave up on thinking any further. Levi did not reply and I took that as a cue to continue on moving forward.
"We should go." I urge him and he nods.
One lightbulb after another, we walk cautiously along the narrow path.
