El Dia De Los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, is a day of festivities.  Often altars are build with the favorites food of their dead relatives, marigolds, sugar skulls, and much more. All around the small town one could see so many colorful altars, some for famous people that someone chose to remember.

"There. All done." Maria said as she finished placing the finishing touches on the altar. This one had no picture, neither did the one next to it. Instead one had a feather hat, another with a similar one, with significant differences. These were extremely old, but Maria and her brother would never donate them to the museums. It was one of the few things they had of their parents left.  She let out a small smile, her eyes filled with sadness. It was so long ago that they had been taken from them. she stared at the altars for a while before a voice spoke.

"I see you have preparations ready once again."

"Why of course. Why wouldn't I participate?" Maria responded to the female voice. She turned around, seeing La Muerte there.  Her sugar white skin contrasted perfectly with the bright rose red of her dress, decorated with golden marigold petals. Her hat was the same red, with candles brightly burning on the top, tiny paper colorful skulls hanging on the brim of her hat.

"Why wouldn't you indeed." La Muerte said. Both of them then heard laughter. Both looked over to see a man, one with half of his face painted as a skull, playing with many children. He laughed, his raven hair shining against the dull candles of the night.  The children scrambled, laughing and trying to steal the ball from him. Maria laughed, and so did La Muerte.

"Todavia sigue de jugueton?*" She asked. Maria nodded.

"No me digas que creias que iba a cambiar.*" Maria said.  She chuckled.

"Of course he would not. I wouldn't expect him too." She smiled. Maria let out a small sigh. If only our parents were here to see how much we had grown... La Muerte had noticed the saddened gaze within her friend's eyes. She then had an idea, smiling.

"cheer up Maria. I have a surprise for both you and your brother on this joyous day."

"Oh really?" Maria asked, now curious. La Muerte nodded.

"Consider this as a present of sorts. You and your brother should head to the center of the plaza. There you'll see your surprise." She said, before disappearing. What could she be up to now? Maria thought, heading over to her brother playing with their states.

"I'm sorry children, but I need to borrow Eduardo for a minute."

"But mama!!" all of them whined. Eduardo laughed, ruffling some of their hairs.

"Don't worry kids, I'll be back! You all play without me!"

"OK!" they all yelled, going back to playing. Eduardo looked over to Maria, his ruby eyes curious.

"What is it that you need me for Maria?" He asked Maria as she led him to the plaza.

"La Muerte said she had a surprise for us."

"I see. I wonder what she has up her sleeves now." he said. Both of them arrived, a bit suspicious when they saw nothing. They started to think she lied.

"Look at you both...surely you have all grown a lot" both of their eyes widened. They immediately turned around, their eyes widening.

"Mama..."

"Papa...." There in front of them both stood the spirits of the Aztec and Mayan empires. Their parents.

"Hello there my children." Mayan replied, his deep voice welcoming to them both. Both of them immediately ran up to them, hugging them tight. They couldn't hold back their tears

"But how?!?" Eduardo had asked. Aztec smiled.

"Thank La muerte child..." She replied. Both of them were too overjoyed that their parents had returned to notice the figure on one of the roofs of the house smiling. Even if it was just for a night, both of them would make the most of it. She knew it.

"Mira los que felices. Como les dolía no verlos otra ves. Les tenia que regresarles el favor. *" she said, before dissapearing once more into the night.

*he's still playful?

*don't tell me that you thought that he was gonna change

*look at them all happy. How much it hurt them not to see them again. I had to return them the favor somehow.
