"Julius, we can work this out," Darien says, his voice steady.
Julius throws Darien a look. "Oh, I know we can, boy. Question is, why should we?"
Darien's eyes grow wide. I step in front of him.
"I have powerful people behind me. If you so much as lay a hand on me, they will kill you in your sleep," I spit.
Julius turns to me and scratches his head with the hand not holding the gun.
He leans closer. "I don't see anyone, do you men?" he asks, earning a laugh from his vulgar crewmen.
Suddenly, one of his men come crashing through the edge of the forest before reaching him. Breathless, and panting, he relays a message in Julius's ear. Julius's eyes grow wide. He looks back at me.
His lips twist into a cruel smile.
"Tie 'em up boys, looks like they're comin with us!" he shouts.
My eyes grow wide as the men start advancing towards us.
Darien leans down to my ear. "Try not to resist, they're taking us back to the other half of the kingdom, we can get help there where people know you."
I scoff. "Yeah, if they don't kill us first."
The men have reached us. They seize us and start wrapping us with ropes. I kick the first man in the shin, earning a cry of pain from him. The second man I ram my shoulder into, making his thin frame fall backward. Two more men grab me, but they're too strong. I can't fight them off. My vision blurs as the third one hits me with something.
The last thing I hear is Alissa cry out before everything fades to black.
