"Of all things - it must be destiny."

The air is cold. This is the only thing I can focus on. Not the people rushing around me, or all the scaffolding that looks as if it could collapse at any moment, not even the security guard who waits patiently by my side. None of that bothers me, only how cold my skin feels. Or maybe it's not. Maybe the air isn't cold at all. Maybe my body is just reacting weirdly. No. That doesn't make sense. None of this makes sense. The air is still cold.
"Are you cold?" I turn to ask my niece.
She's sitting on the steps, head in her hands. She looks bored. She also looks mad. When I ask if she's cold, the solemn look remains. "I'm tired."
"That's not what I asked."
"Uncle Aidan," she whines, eyes rolling back.
"Kenzie," I whine back.
"Why are we still here?" She asks with a groan. "The concert ended half an hour ago."
"Forty-five minutes, actually," the security guard, Jason, corrects. Kenzie holds her hand out towards him with a wide expression, as if to say see!
"We're waiting for traffic to die down," I tell her.
Kenzie doesn't believe me. Smart girl. Her teenage years will be good. She'll be able to call out all the bullshit.
