Staked: Chapter Five
"Wait," Jaqueline said through groans. She felt as though every single one of her bones were snapping in half and then slowly growing back together. "What did you just say to me? There's no such thing as vampires. Those are just made up monsters."
Anneck sighed, people always said that He looked around; the bell had already rung for class to begin. The halls were barren and papers were laying all around the floor along with an occasional pencil. Most of the time, if you saw a free pencil, you grabbed that baby right up. "Have you recently consumed any..." Anneck looked around again and whispered "vampire blood from a vein?" Jackie shook her head, tears starting to well up from the combination of confusion and absolute pain. "I don't know what is going on." She said.
"That means that if you weren't turned, you must have had parents that were vampires." Anneck said, thinking aloud.
"There's no way my mother and father are vampires- oh." Jackie said suddenly realizing that her 'parents' weren't her real parents.
"What?" Anneck said, completely lost.
"I'm adopted." She answered. The two shared a moment of silence together, well, other than Jackie's constant screams of anguish.
"I'm sorry." Anneck said, trying to comfort her.
Jaqueline tried to imagine her mother as a vampire, she had only see. A few pictures of her were all she'd ever seen. Plus, she had no idea what a real vampire even looked like.
"Listen, we can get out of here if you want." Anneck said, placing a hand on her thigh. A rush flew through her entire body. The pain had stopped but she didn't know how long it would last before the next thing started up. Jaqueline nodded as a single tear rolled down her cheek. Anneck grabbed her again and helped her to walk out the school's front doors.
They walked to her car and Anneck asked for her keys. She didn't ask any questions, just threw him the car keys and walked around to the other side of the car. As she got in, Anneck revved the engine and they started down the road.
"Where are we going?" Jackie asked him. He rolled down the convertible top and put on a pair of sunglasses that he pulled out of his pocket.
"My house." Anneck said, looking over to her as they spoke.
Jaqueline wondered how he could be so calm in a situation like this. She wondered how he knew so much about vampires. She wondered why he was being so nice to her. She wondered everything about him.
"Wow, I've never gone home with a guy before the first date," Jackie said with a grin spreading across her face. Anneck laughed and placed both hands on the wheel, gripping it tightly. The two of them drove down a back road that was draped on each side with thick, green life. Flowers grew up and down the stretch of grass along the edge. Most of the town wasn't this beautiful, mostly modern looking houses, lots of expensive construction, when there was grass and flowers, they weren't wild. They were kept clean and cut precisely to perfection.
Jackie and Anneck pulled into a large, victorian styled house a while later. Her jaw dropped and she opened the door and walked around to meet up with Anneck who was already fiddling with his keys, trying to find the one that unlocks the door. She smiled at him as he got a frustrated look on his face and accidentally dropped them on the floor.
He opened the door and made Jacqueline a place on the futon that sat in their enormous and bright living room. He sat down beside her and placed a hand on her leg again.
"It's going to be okay. I promise." Anneck said, reassuringly.
"How do you know that though? Why do you know so much about all this stuff? How do I know I just don't have some disease or something?" Jackie said, finally starting to break down.
Anneck sighed. His face suddenly turned pale, all the blood rushing to his heart. His eyes got dark and two of his teeth turned sharp and long.
"Because I am one."
