Staked: Chapter Ten
"We'll then... I was going to-"
Jaqueline grabbed the blood bag out of Anneck's hand and drained it down her throat.
She moaned and squeezed it tighter, getting every last drop. Jackie dropped the empty bag to the floor and wiped her mouth. Anneck's eyes widened as she fell to the ground, suddenly realizing what she had done.
"Oh my god," she said starting to panic. "I didn't know I would like that so much. This is not good. No. I can't do this to people. It hurts them. I don't want to hurt anybody. This is wrong. How can you live like this?"
"Woah, woah, woah! Hold on. Calm down for a second. I know it's hard to realize it but you haven't done anything wrong. You haven't hurt anyone. I have. It's awful but it's part of who we are now. Instinct. Purely instinct. Just like a tiger, they have the urge to kill; we do too." He said, bending down beside Jaqueline. The tears were trying to escape and she was trying to hold them back. He placed his hand on her cheek and wiped away some of the tears that had made it through.
"Hey, listen to me. You're going to be okay. Give me your hand." Anneck said as he held out a hand to help her up with. She gave it to him without a question and he pulled her up. He scooped her up into his arms and walked her back into the room where Cora sat, typing away on her little laptop.
"What happened?" She said, standing up and running over to Jackie who lay in his arms.
"She is okay. Just in a little bit of shock. I gave her some blood and she-"
"YOU WHAT?!?!" Cora screamed. "ANNECK! DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT IF HER BODY HAD REJECTED THAT BLOOD, SHE COULD HAVE DIED?!?!"
"Yes sister, I am aware of the consequences but she needed it."
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE 'NEEDED IT?' " Cora said, still very angry about her brother's misbehavior.
"Don't you remember? Right after your fangs come in, you have sudden urges to kill and destroy innocent people's lives. We couldn't have her doing that. It would send her into shock." He responded.
Jaqueline processed the words coming out of Anneck's mouth. Yet again he was protecting her. He understood that she didn't want to have to hurt anyone.
"ANNECK- oh." Cora said, suddenly realizing that Anneck saved her. "But she is already in shock, don't you realize that? She is already in shock."
"While that is true, if Jackie had drank from a living human, the shock would've been much greater to her. It would have overwhelmed her senses and she would have broken down." Anneck answered calmly.
Cora stared deeply into Anneck's eyes. She was trying to tell if he was playing another one of his famous tricks. He peered back, holding his ground. After a few moments, Cora broke the silence.
"Fine. Lie her down. We have work do be done."**********
Anneck's fingers typed quickly on the laptop he held in his lap. He sat on the couch beside Jackie who was just now waking up. She groaned as she stretched. Her head lay in his lap an he had an arm resting on her shoulder. She smiled at the gesture.
"Good morning sleepy head." He said when she moved in his lap and he realized she was awake. Jackie giggled and responded with a "Good morning to you too" and smile.
"Someone's a morning person." Anneck said cheerfully. He clearly was too.
"Only with you," she responded keeping the flirting going.
"That makes this so much more difficult," Anneck groaned.
A puzzled look spread across Jackie's face. What was her comment going to make harder? She suddenly got worried. Had his feelings changed for her over night. Maybe he thought that since she broke down, it meant she was weak and couldn't handle having a drama queen as a friend. Maybe things could have gone differently for them if she hadn't have broken down. Maybe they could have been together...
Anneck interrupted her thoughts and brought her back to reality. She gave him a nervous look and sat up, just now realizing she had no pants on... She gathered the blanket that he had lay across her and placed it in her lap and faced him to hear the bad news.
"Jacqueline," Anneck said, sadness and concern hinting in his tone "Cora did some research. Your birth mother was married to a man named Rayne Peterson. Your mother is Terry Peterson. She was a vampire. Cora knows her. Your father, however, was not a vampire."
The news hit her like a smack across the face. She wasn't a pure bred. That meant that if she wanted to survive she was going to have to kill people. She had two options; kill or be killed...
