"I would've stayed to plan this further, but I don't like to wait," Taylor told Benji as they looked left and right in the hall for police guards. Benji nodded as he silently picked the lock.
"So what's the plan?" he asked.
Taylor lowered his voice to a slight whisper. "We get out of the cell, turn left to the stairs, go down and to the end of the hallway. When the bus comes in, you wait for my signal and that's when we jump into the train. We must stay hidden until they arrive at the station and when they are distracted, we run. We need to be fast or they'll notice we're gone."
"What about the security cameras?" Benji asked.
"The night watch is always distracted in movies about prison escape," Taylor reasoned.
Benji nodded, "Seems reasonable enough."
A light click sound came from the lock as Benji managed to open it. Taylor looked both ways in the hallway. A guard was coming their way. "Quick!" he whispered. "Pretend to be asleep!"
Both of them fell on the floor with barely enough time to kick on their blankets before the guard passed by them. The guard stopped at their cell for a moment out of suspicion before passing. Benji and Taylor let out a sigh of relief that the guard didn't notice the lock being unlocked.
They waited about five minutes before stepping out of their cell. Benji made a mad dash across the hallway, still in his socks. Taylor followed, looking around for night guards. There was only one in sight, but he was far away and his back was facing them.
Benji and Taylor tip-toed down the stairs and the warm beam of dawn light fell on them as they reached the bottom floor of the building, which contained many large windows. Taylor surged forward before he felt a harsh tug on his clothes that made him stumble backwards. Benji let go of Taylor and slunk into an open doorway.
Taylor followed and a guard passed them a split second later. That was close, Taylor thought as he gave a look of thanks to Benji.
They peeked at the doorway as guards began walking towards an open door. "Five new inmates this time," a rough voice said before walking past them.
"Now's our chance!" Benji whispered. Taylor looked around and saw all the guards were distracted in guarding the incoming prisoners.
They both emerged from their hiding place and ran.
