As soon as their feet clamped down on the iron of the old train, they let out a heavy sigh. Taylor lightly pushed Benji in efforts to get him to run.
They both hid under some seats on the train, across from one another. "Check the train before it leaves," Taylor heard someone say. "Oh shit," Benji murmured under his breath.
"It's fine, I already checked it. Besides, Officer Hawkins will be taking it back to the station," another voice said. The Hawk will be riding this train!? Taylor gasped, covering his mouth.
Heavy footsteps responded to his disbelief. Taylor flinched when Officer Hawkins walked by Benji and his bright orange suit was showing from under the seat. She sat at the seat Benji was under and Benji was silently screaming.
His eyes wandered as if he was wondering if he should hide under another seat or not. "Don't move, don't move," Taylor mouthed to him and Benji nodded, frightened.
The train shifted and Benji lurched forward, hitting Officer Hawkin's feet. Benji's mouth widened and his face became extremely panicked as he inched far from her feet. Surely, she had felt him there, but the officer didn't move an inch out of suspicion.
The train started chugging away from the prison and Taylor watched as the tall grey prison buildings came out of sight. "Charley, I'm sure you've seen the ol' place, how is it?" the deep, serious voice of Lee's mom growled, almost like a lion before leaping at its prey.
"It's a bit worn out. I got some new fellas working on repairs, but otherwise, it's durable," Charley responded back, his voice old with hints of a southern accent.
I tried to not think too much throughout the ride. Thinking would've made me more nervous. I felt the train pull to a stop and I quietly sighed in relief. My back was aching from staying under the train seat for too long and I impatiently waited for Officer Hawkins to leave so we could safely leave our hiding spots.
There was a moment of silence and I was confused. I didn't hear her leave but the train was empty. A wave of startled feeling enveloped me when I felt a strong grasp on my collar from behind me and pull me out from under the seat.
I nearly screamed when I saw it was Officer Hawkins who grabbed me and she reached for Benji too. Benji yelped in surprise and she held us both up in the air like helpless little animals.
"You think I wouldn't have known you two were down there this whole time?" she muttered, her grasp on my prison suit tightening.
"You guys are up for a heck lot of trouble."
