"See you tomorrow."

You waved your best friend off as she parted ways with you at the center of the campus, hopping in her boyfriend's motorcycle. Your gaze followed the vehicle's speedy motion, quickly disappearing from the school gates. Your smile was instantly wiped out as you sighed, looking at your old watch latched on your wrist.

( 5:57 )

It was getting late but you didn't want to go home yet.

You always didn't.

If coming home meant smelling your mother's freshly cooked dinner, welcomed by your puppy's happy licks, feeling the warmth of your small but comfy house and watching how your father smile at your tired figure, you would love to come home as soon as the bell ring.

But it wasn't like that.

Coming home now meant taking in the awful scent of your stepfather's smoke around the house, getting random punches and kicks by your stepbrother, feeling the painful atmosphere in the small space of your use, and watching how your once beautiful home becomes the hellhole of your stepfamily.

Your father died ten years ago in a plane crash. He was on his way back from work in London but then there was an unfortunate malfunctioning in the machine, leading to a horrible accident far from the north area. You waited with your mother in the airport, smile fading when you saw people gathering in front of the huge television near the counter. You were just eleven at that time but you knew.

Your father was gone.

You spent years watching your mother struggle with life, trying to support your needs alone. You watched as she endlessly cried herself to sleep, barely resting her eyes as you saw her in the morning. The darkness under her eyes was visible, the redness of her nose and her cheeks.

You couldn't do anything about it but to just focus on your studies to make her at least proud and satisfied, seeing that you didn't waste her hard work for your future.

That's why when she got the chance to open her heart to another man, you let her be.

She looked so happy and contented when he gives her flowers and chocolates, as if she was in her teenage days. Her cheeks were rosy, her lips glossy, and her eyes were the brightest you've ever seen after your father's presence though.

You were happy.

But of course, happiness is only temporary.

As you turned 17, you realized that your mother's marriage wasn't that healthy. She knew late that her new husband has a son already, keeping him a secret was what hurt your mother the most. Trust should be built stronger but your mother's resolve cracked. They had their arguments, fights, may it be vocal or physical.

It hurts you when you see how your mother helplessly love him, even becoming blind with the real intentions why the man married her.

You knew he was using your mother.

When your stepbrother was sheltered under your home by your mother's kind heart, you saw how disgusted he was. You saw the familiar glare he had as his father does it to you and your mother.
