CHAPTER SONG: Move Along by The All-American Rejects
Katrina's POV
"Mom I have to go to administration to pick up my schedule" I announced while taking out my only suitcase from the trunk of my dad's 2000 Honda Civic that he's had since forever. While I struggled to take out my suitcase, mom held my backpack and dad observed the buildings visible around us.
"Okay honey we'll come with you until you get to your dorm. Come on Anthony let's go! oh where's the administration building?" mom said looking around while nudging dad's side. All he did was nod towards his left. After getting the suitcase out and slamming down the trunk lid I turned around to find them already on their way to administration. urghh I mumbled under breath while lugging the bag behind me and tugging my skirt out of habit and wrapping my long cardigan around myself, also out of habit.
I finally caught up with them when they got to the glass doors. We walk in finding many students roaming around with their friends, talking, laughing. That's when I realized, no one is here with their parents. I suddenly started to feel embarrassed. "Katrina come on!" my mom said raising her voice slightly, causing some eyes to snap in our direction making my head to drop down and cheeks to turn red. I continued to follow them until I looked up to see that they were about open the door to the office.
"Wait!" they both whipped their heads around to look at me. "...uhh it's okay...I can go alone". They both looked at me with an indescribable expression. I took that as my cue to grab my wallet, leaving my suitcase with them and make way towards the door. I felt bad leaving them but at the same time, I knew they would get a heart attack if they heard about my dorm room situation. I was snapped out of my thoughts by a man's voice.
"Good evening miss what can I help you with?" a middle-aged man with a few white hairs asked me with a kind smile on his face.
"Hi umm this my first semester here and I got an email that I pick up my schedule and dorm key here?" my statement coming out awkwardly and sounding more like a question.
"Okay can I get your ID hun?" he chuckled at my nervousness.
"Sure..uh...here you go..." I handed him my state ID since I don't have my license. I know it's kinda pathetic that I'm 21 and don't have my license.
"Ah here you are Katrina Calista Ryder...hmm" he mumbled to himself with his brows furrowed. After a few more moments he looked up at me from his computer. "Are you aware that you're sharing the dorm with a male student and have you been informed about the dorm rules?"
This is why I didn't want my parents to come in with me because if they found out I'm about to share a room with a guy they would take me back home. And I worked way too hard to get accepted here and convince them to let me dorm this far from home. I even had to secretly call the university a million times begging them to allow me to use this room because they were and are completely packed and this was the only room "available" at the time but because of my grades they couldn't help but allow me to share the room. So after all that I wasn't gonna let my parent's narrow-mindedness and my roommate's gender get in the way of attending my dream school at the last minute.
"Yes, I was briefed about it in the email." I spoke a little more confidently while pushing my glasses back up on the bridge of my nose.
"Well alright then. Welcome to Grandview University Katrina, good luck with everything!" he wished me with a wide smile.
"Thank you so much sir" I extended my hand out for a handshake which he gladly accepted.
He smiled once more while handing my schedule, room card, and ID. I quietly thanked him for the last time and left the office to find my parents sitting on the bench across the hallway whispering to each other but stopped once they saw me. Dad looked away while mom smiled at me "how'd it go baby?" she said standing up and taking my hands in hers and sitting me down next to dad. "mom... I just went to get my schedule and room key everything's going great" I laughed lightly. But stopped once I saw their faces that held seriousness.
