CHAPTER SONG: Beating Heart by Ellie Goulding

Steven's POV

We both ran hand in hand through the carnival while people stared at us like we were crazy.

I turned around to see one guy running after us. Where's the other one?

"Shouldn't we be getting out of here instead of running around in circles?" She said in a panicked voice. We had been dodging these idiots for the past ten minutes but could never make it to the front gate. I don't know who these people are but I definitely don't wanna find out because I saw a fucking knife sticking out of one the guys' back pocket. I don't even know where Mia and them are.

She abruptly stopped in her tracks and pulled me back from running. She was looking straight ahead with a scared expression which made me turn my head to see what had her so frightened. It was Steroids. "This way" She pulled me to the left towards some picnics tables which held a few families.

I pushed her ahead of me when I felt an arm wrap around my neck from the back. She grunted when her front bumped into the bench but quickly recovered and turned around. I got too caught up with watching her and didn't get a chance too resist the grip on my neck until it tightened and oxygen started failing to reach my lungs.

"Kitten...help" I choked out. I tried kicking the guys' shins but this dude was stronger than Steroids, I could've still taken him but again, I got distracted by her and didn't get a chance to defend myself.  I feel like a little bitch.

She gasped quietly and took a few steps back making her back hit the same bench she bumped into seconds ago.

"Come on...give up nerd" The guy spoke to her jerking my body around. I saw her moving her hands around on the table behind her back looking for something until her eyes slightly widened. She brought her hands in front of her and my eyes dropped to see what she was holding; a squeezable ketchup bottle.

She wouldn't.

I heard two voices beginning to laugh behind me. Steroids caught up with us.

She cut off the laughter by squeezing the bottle in their faces making the ketchup shoot out.

She would.

She did.

The guy's grasp loosened from my neck and I took the opportunity to elbow him in the crotch and reached out to her. I held her arms trying to recuperate while she watched in shock as Steroids screamed, "it's in my eye!" rubbing his eyes, while the other guy held his lower region in pain.

I took her hand and pulled her away from them and made bee line to the front gate. We finally made it and instantly heard a car horn from our left. Tyler's car.

"What the fuck took you so long? we were about to call the cops" Tyler asked stepping on the gas.

"I'll tell you the entire story later but the most important thing is that Kitten saved my life" I looked to my right to find her already gazing at me with a twinkle in her eyes. Her eyes really are beautiful...

We smiled at each other before she turned her head to look out the window. We all sat in comfortable silence for a few moments until I heard a giggle next to me. Kitten. I watched her as she moved her head to look at the front of the car with a toothy smile.

"With a ketchup bottle", she lightly laughed to herself.

"What?" Mia turned around from the passenger seat, clearly confused. Kitten only laughed.

"Did I miss something?" Dustin said to my left as he leaned forward.

Her laughter grew louder in the small space of the car. There were crinkles on the corners her eyes and her dimples were deeper than ever. Her laugh wasn't high or low pitched, just right, at least until she accidentally let out a loud snort causing me to erupt in laughter. She covered her nose and mouth with both her hands trying to control herself. I watched as the rims of her eyes began watering and I started to do this thing I always do when I'm laughing, I started to slap my thigh with my hand. I don't know what was so funny, but it was funny.
