taylor stayed in london for three more weeks. for once, everything was okay, and she was happy. but little did she know, london was the calm before the storm.
meanwhile, she enjoyed her time away from the states. she and joe went sightseeing and went on dates. taylor was determined not to waste any of her time in london.
sometimes, taylor wondered whether she had found the one. she had thought calvin was 'the one', but that relationship had deteriorated. all the boys and their expensive cars never took her quite where joe did.
but joe was different. he cared about her, and supported her and her career. and as sappy as it was, taylor was grateful for him.
this was what taylor was thinking about as she sat in the kitchen the next morning. it had been about a week since she had come to london, and she did not regret coming, not one bit.
she heard the shower run in the bathroom, and a few minutes later, joe came into the kitchen and got himself a cup of coffee. "hey baby," he said, with a small smirk.
taylor wrinkled her nose. "you're trying on calling me baby, like trying on clothes. it's too early in our relationship to call me that."
joe laughed and went over to the breakfast table where taylor was sitting. he bent down to give her a kiss, then sat in the chair next to her. "what's for breakfast?" he asked.
"i don't know," taylor mumbled. "what do you even have in your house?"
taylor got up and began searching his cabinets. he had boxes of cereal, an expired loaf of bread, coffee, and various cooking items. next, she looked in his refrigerator, and was surprised to see actual food. she found a carton of eggs and a package of bacon. this was more than taylor had bargained for. joe had real food in his house. taylor had dated several boys who had nothing more than snacks in their pantries.
"so," said joe, once they were seated, "what do you plan on doing today?"
"work, probably," taylor replied. "what about you?"
"do you fancy a beer?" he asked.
taylor shrugged. "sure," she said nonchalantly. "anyway, i'll just be in my room, doing work. i mean, it's not my room, but you know what i mean." after finishing her breakfast, she went to her room and opened her laptop. taylor needed to get work done. just because she was in london didn't mean that she didn't need to do work.
taylor decided to get some songwriting done. she wanted to write a couple of love songs, now that she was with joe. their relationship had just begun, but taylor already had so much love towards him.
but taylor had not written a real love song in a while. she could not remember writing a song about falling in love. the last time she had ever written and recorded a song about falling in love was during the speak now era. "begin again" didn't count because it was more emotional, unlike "sparks fly" and "enchanted".
the day passed mundanely.. taylor sat in her room the entire day. joe went out and bought groceries, then returned home and worked as well. much later, joe popped his head into her room and asked again, "do you fancy a beer?"
he was wearing his jacket, and was holding two red plastic cups and a bottle of some sort of british beer. "i mean, yeah. okay." she rose from the chair. "so are we just going to drink it on your couch?"
joe grinned. "actually...i have another idea. grab your coat."
taylor put on her coat and let joe lead her out the door. they rode the elevator up to the top floor, then climbed up a flight of stairs to the roof.
the roof of the apartment building was not in poor condition. there was a pool, and several benches overlooked the skyline. they sat on one of them. the skyline was still just as magnificent here as it was on the top of the shard.
joe opened the bottle of beer and poured it into the cups, giving one to taylor. "cheers," he said, touching his cup to taylor's. she tipped the cup back, letting the bitter taste fill her mouth and throat.
they ended up drinking most of the beer. taylor felt mildly intoxicated. she laid her head on joe's shoulder, and he put his arm around her.
"you know," said joe, "i really fancy you."
"say you fancy me, not fancy stuff," taylor murmured. her speech was becoming slurred. she didn't care.
taylor lifted her head to kiss joe. the taste of his lips was her idea of luxury. he slid a hand onto her cheek, and the kiss deepened. this was what taylor had been missing out on. she had never felt like this with her other boyfriends. perhaps joe really was the one for her.
for a moment, she feared that someone, somewhere, was watching them, but she dismissed the idea. regardless, his love was a secret she was hoping, dreaming, dying to keep.
the two lovers sat, gazing out at the skyline. the wind whipped at their faces and the temperature was cold, but taylor felt warm and safe and content.
and for once, everything was okay.
