We left my house and I sat quietly inside the Hummer holding onto my dad's gear. This was the Marine that raised me. To who I am, how I act, how I command. This is the last memories of my dad I have. I was crying now and could not stop. We had only made it to the interstate exit when we were rushed. With no one manning the machine guns on top I quickly got up and started shooting down what I could to get my feelings out. It only helped a little, I still felt worthless. We had leading officers in the front Hummer, secondary officers in the second, and then everyone else in the next three Hummers.

It might have been to be a bit of an inconvenience to do so, since each Hummer would not have an officer in it. We made it like this so that we could talk over plans and ideas together and be able to become more orderly. We had a radio on that connected us to the next Hummer so we could talk to the secondary officers. It was agreed that once we ended up at the base we would ask for a quarter house and stay as a group.

We were about thirty miles south of the exit when the Hummers were swarmed again, this time in greater numbers. We were stuck no matter how many we killed, they just kept coming. They started tearing apart the Hummers: wheels, windows, radiator, and more. We would not be able to continue in them afterwards. We sat there gunning them down for as long as we could. They eventually left after about an hour of attacking.

We all got out of the Hummers and looked at our numbers. We had lost the drivers of all five Hummers, and most of the kids from the Early College. It was now only Cameron, Tiffany, Alexis, Emilee, Maddy, Madii, Makayla, Noah, Chris, Sadie, Sophia, Justus, Will, Ky and myself. Seeing that we were low on numbers we geared up to the best of our ability grabbing extra ammo, sidearms, armor, rations, headsets, and an extra rifle. Cameron, Alexis, Tiffany, Justus, Ky, and I grabbed a bag and filled them up with more things. Mine held everything I had grabbed from my house.

After we were all well equipped we set off following the interstate east, towards Shelby. We all did not know what to expect ahead of us and could only hope for the best.
