My entire world froze, stopping everything in its path. My father, laying on the floor, grasping his abdomen. I rocketed to the floor, covering my father as I pulled his gun from his police belt. I shot at the unknown figure above the rooftop who seemed to have a rifle.
I picked my father up, dragging him to the car. I slammed the car doors and sped to the hospital. "It's gonna' be okay, dad. You're gonna' be okay.
I slammed the breaks as I opened the passenger door, dragging my father out. We stumbled toward the hospital entrance.
We entered the building as I yelled for help. The woman at the front counter came to assist me. "What happened?"
"He was shot." I panted.
The woman and a few others took my father to a hospital room as I ran out the building. I got in the car, the handgun still in the glove compartment. I sped toward Joshua's home.
I knew Officer Watson wasn't home because her car wasn't out front. I kicked down the front door, squeezing the handgun in my hand. I stomped up the stairs as Joshua locked his door.
I kicked his door down, seeing him holding a phone. "Hurry!" I smacked Joshua in the face with the butt of the gun. I picked up his phone, seeing "911" across the screen. I dropped his phone on the floor, stomping it out. "What are you doing?" Joshua yelled.
I put the gun to Joshua's head. "You set me up!"
"What? No! I gave you the right address!"
"How did he know I would be there?" I yelled.
"I don't know!"
"You better cough up an answer then! Or I swear to god I'll kill you!"
I heard Joshua's neighbor enter the house. "Is everything alright in here? Mrs. Watson?"
I looked at Joshua, the gun still to his head. Joshua barely murmured the words, "Yes, Mrs. Bee! Everything is fine!"
"Okay, just wanted to check in." Mrs. Bee said as she walked out the door that was practically no longer there.
"Joshua, I don't want to have to kill you!"
"He forced me to do it... He gave me the address... He told me he'd kill my mom and me if I didn't." Joshua sobbed.
I came to the sudden realization, pulling the gun away from Joshua's head. "I was never here. Got it?" I said sternly.
Joshua sniffled and nodded his head. I walked out the house, hopping into the car, and driving off.
A ding went off, I checked my phone.
Unknown: How is your father doing?
Me: You're dead.
Unknown: If so, your father will die first.
Me: What do you want from me? What did I ever do to you?
I struggled to text and drive at once.
Unknown: I want you to realize what we as human beings truly are. You specifically. But, haven't you ever thought, that it was never about you, Crystal? Maybe, you were targeted by the wrong person, or perhaps you weren't the person being targeted?
Me: Do you want money?
Unknown: Your actions cannot be resolved by money. Not anymore. But, sooner or later, you'll see the person you truly are, and the person behind the unknown texts.
Me: Where are you, you son of a bitch?
Unknown: The motel, of course. Better hurry. Jason just got back home. You wouldn't want him going missing again.
I sped home, nearly causing an accident. I sobbed, knowing my family could die, just as Joslyn did. Just as Trisha did. Just as Tom did. Just as Aaron did. Just as William's brother, Eric did. Just as... my sanity did.
I stopped outside the motel. I saw a crowd of people surrounding my motel room. I could hear my mother and Jason screaming in fear.
I swung the motel door open as a S.W.A.T. team popped out. They held their guns to my face as they made me get to my knees, hands up in the air. They cuffed me, saying the one thing I never though would be said.
"Crystal Garrix, you are under arrest for the murder of Joslyn Patters." They carried me to the police cars as my mother cried. I sobbed as I viewed the crowd shouting at me in anger. "You're sick!" "Who would do such a thing?" "You bitch!"
Before I was put into the police vehicle, I saw someone in the crowd. At this point, my world had officially frozen. It was almost as if I'd seen the world being nuked.
Everything was gone, including my inner-self. Everything. All of it. It had all led up to this. My future. William. My father. My mother. Jason. Joslyn. Tom. Trisha. Aaron. It had all been one person who influenced it all. The unknown number.
The police officer slammed the car door as I starred at someone familiar in the crowd. That familiar person gave me an eerie smile, seeming as if they'd won. It was... him. It was... the unknown number.
It was... Eric.
