The following week of school went as smoothly as Talia had thought it would.
Like chunky peanut butter.
She felt bad for practically ignoring Damian but he didn't exactly make an effort to talk to her. However, she later understood that the reason he didn't make an effort was because Liam practically glued himself to her side. He'd walk her to class and then when that class was over, he'd be waiting outside the classroom for her to walk her to the next class. She couldn't help but notice how terrible all of her so called friends were all of a sudden. They were rude and cursed out teachers, they drew all over the desks in the back of all the classes they didn't decide to ditch, and we're just overall terrible human beings.
They were loud, and it kind of made her miss the peaceful silence that she had with Damian. The morning after the party where she woke up wrapped in his arms, he looked so peaceful in his sleep, that holding her was the only thing that could bring him solace. And for some reason that brought her happiness as well, knowing that just by letting him hold her, she could make him so relaxed and at peace. The slow rising and falling of his chest and the way his shaggy yet somehow straight hair, fell into his face made her heart melt. She couldn't even begin to be able to comprehend why this boy had this effect on her.
But her thoughts were interrupted when she heard Liam say something, she knew it wasn't directed at her but at the people in their group. They were all looking at something across the cafeteria. They resembled, at least to her, a pack of hungry wolves. They followed it, all of them in sync, none of them missing a beat. It seemed like a scene out of a crappy high school movie. She struggled to see what they were looking at since there were so many students walking around the cafeteria at that moment. However she understood when a familiar name was muttered.
Damian had just walked in, with new and faded butterflies drawn onto his arms.
"Hey, nice butterflies Tinkerbell!" One of Talia's friends called out across the room. He looked at them, his face lighted up for a split second when he saw Talia but it darkened when he saw Liam and the other friends. Talia looked at Damian's arms, which were visible because his sweatshirt sleeves were rolled up.
He had listened to her and her heart dropped into her stomach.
He stood there motionless for a few seconds, his eye line easily traceable to Talia. An unspoken thing between them, neither one of them broke it, neither of them wanted to. Though both looks were conveying different feelings. Damian's was asking for help, even if he didn't know it. Talia's was pity, because she knew how relentless Liam and his pack could be. She wanted to tell him to just walk away but her lips felt like they were glued shut so she tried to tell him with her eyes. However, it didn't seem to be working.
"Draw those yourself, fruit loop?" Another person from the group heckled, causing Damian to blush and break the eye contact with Talia and walk out of the cafeteria.
"Awe we hurt little baby's feelings." Liam laughed, his grip around Talia's waist tightened as he did so. She pried his arm off and stood up hastily making Liam look up at her in annoyance and confusion.
"What the fuck is wrong with you, Liam?" She snapped, looking down at him.
"You don't have the right to talk." He snorted. "I heard about you're little sleepover with that, freak." He stood up more so they were face to face. "You're lucky I'm so understanding." He hissed threateningly.
"Screw you." She practically spat in his face.
"That's your job sweetheart." He leaned in to kiss her but she shoved him away before he had the chance to.
