A month went by and I hadn’t seen or heard from him.

It was only when I saw Baldric, his younger brother, at school that I discovered Rohan was not allowed to leave their circle’s detention centre until his punishment for taking another being to their sacred site was decided.

Luckily Baldric was a free spirit - like Rohan - and didn’t believe in some of the rules in The Ancient Codex; this often led to him being removed from school for long periods of time in order to help him understand the dangers of being so dismissive of his heritage. ‘Give this to your sister,’ Baldric said to Raven, handing her a note and promising he would be in touch.

My powers were growing and away from ‘mystical school’, I would practice other spells, some of which were not on the syllabus to be taught - love spells, darker protection spells, potions to enhance beauty, knowledge spells and connection spells, to name but a few.

On many occasions they went wrong and I had to swiftly devise excuses to explain why the barn had gone up in smoke again, or why my sister no longer had eyelashes. Inside, though, I think my parents were secretly proud that I was beginning to accept the idea of my witchcraft fate; they rarely punished me for these accidents.

There was one spell I couldn’t give up on. I knew that if I mastered it I could be with Rohan without putting anyone at risk, but it was proving harder than I thought. ‘I’ve followed all the instructions - why isn’t it working?’ I cried to Raven as I attempted the ‘connection’ spell one last time before we went to bed.

‘I don’t know. Did you put the note in the fire at the right time?’ Raven asked flicking through the book for answers, but none came.

I knew I had done; the note had flown like a butterfly and hovered over the pot of glimmering green liquid before shooting straight into the vessel, turning the liquid from the calm emerald colour to a violent red. The raging fluid crashed against the cauldron’s walls as though the fire had increased in intensity.

Scared that our parents would hear the commotion, we quickly extinguished the fire and jumped onto my bed.

After exhausting every possible avenue, we finally admitted defeat and went to sleep.

The night was still and hot, and no sound alerted me of the visitor I would receive. I tossed and turned in my sleep and whilst in a deep, dreamless slumber, I was still somehow aware of my surroundings.

As if a tornado were heading towards the house, I sat bolt upright and immediately ran to the window.

I flung the curtains wide, unsure what answers the night sky would provide. When I looked up and saw only the moon, brightly shining back at me, I realised I must still be asleep and went back to bed … but was I?
