CHAPTER SIX – THE BLOOD DOCTOR
(Part 5)
Luther ignored me again as he opened the door and went straight to his bedroom, leaving me to sit in the cleaned crime scene, overwhelmed by emotions and bleak thoughts of the future. Hoping that he just needed time to cool down, I left him to gather his thoughts but he didn’t emerge. Eventually I plucked up the courage and knocked on his door.
‘Come in,’ he said as I slowly opened the door and peered round it.
‘Can we talk?’ I asked as he waved me in.
He lay on his bed, looking at his grandmother’s picture. ‘She looks like a very wise woman…’ I commented as he put the picture in the drawer and sat upright.
‘She was, yes - but not about everything. She told me I would meet someone unique, who would make my heart race but I never thought she meant someone who could tear it out of my chest and race away with it.’
I chuckled at his slightly barbed comment. I sat on the edge of his bed and tried to get him to make eye contact. ‘Everything I do, I try to do it with you in mind now. I don’t want to hurt you but, whether you believe it or not, I’m not always in control of my body. If you want to be with me like you say you do, you have to be with me through the good and bad times. I really like you, Luther - I’m starting to wonder if we could have a future together… but it’s going to be a slow process, I cannot change who I am.’ I held out my hand for his, hoping he wouldn’t reject me.
He hesitated. ‘Please -’ I begged as he reached out and pulled me towards him.
‘I will be as slow as you want,’ he replied as he held me in his arms. Surprisingly, it didn’t feel wrong.
Less of a passionate, loving embrace and more of a friend-in-need cuddle, though; I followed his body language and joined him lying on the bed, answering his questions, in detail, about how I’d bled the bell boy dry. ‘I’m sorry I reacted that way. I was just in shock and was annoyed that Ms Vaduva got involved. It’s just another person who knows your secret, I suppose,’ he said resting his chin on my head.
I gave him a squeeze. ‘I completely understand, but I think she can be trusted. There are not many elderly women who would get stuck in and clean up flesh and blood at the drop of a hat…’ I joked as he laughed and kissed my head.
Lying in each other’s arms, the conversation ran dry as the events of the past few days saturated our minds. ‘Do you think we’ll be able to make it work?’ he asked as he kissed my forehead.
I looked up at him and gazed into his uncertain eyes. ‘We can only try,’ I replied as we got into the bed and I fell asleep in his arms.
******
Waking up next to Luther, it was like the fog had lifted and the sunshine had burned through the clouds. He opened his eyes and smiled at me immediately. ‘Morning, did you sleep well?’ he asked as he felt my stirring stomach.
