The wounds opened larger by the minute. ‘I think this is it!’ he shrieked as he frantically ran to the bathroom to get water and fresh towels. My shrieks rocked the apartment, setting small cracks in the nearby walls.
Blood poured from the gashes; this was unlike any pain I had recently experienced. The vision was now a permanent blur as I tried to examine the extent of the wounds on my violently moving stomach.
I could feel the hot liquid on my hands, but nothing else was visible. ‘I need help,’ I screamed between pants.
‘I’m here for you - but I don’t know what to do,’ Luther panicked as he called Alin but was unsuccessful with speaking to her.
The wounds grew and grew - longer, wider. ‘I can see something!’ Luther squealed as he enthusiastically tried to inspect at closer quarters.
He put his face in front of the largest wound and tried to put his hand on it.
My skin sparked with rage as his hand connected; within a second he was blasted to the other end of the corridor. The bedroom door ended his journey rather abruptly, knocking him unconscious.
Meanwhile, the pain crippled my body, leaving me alone and desperate for someone to help get this thing out of me. I begged for my life but it didn’t stop.
Instead, it just got worse.
Lying in a pool of blood, I realised it was my last chance to try to get help. I used all the energy I could muster to cast a ‘finding spell’, reciting the words rapidly and growing increasingly desperate.
I managed to finish the words through my screams. ‘Please bring some help!’ I cried, holding my stomach, continuing to beg for my life.
A faint cloud of green smoke formed above my head, growing denser by the second. Luther began to stir, distracting my attention from the strange fog. ‘Luther…’ he came back round, and crawled weakly over to me.
‘I guess I won’t be doing that again.’ He held his forehead, trying to hide the gash. The blood trickled down his face as he tried to wipe it away, but it was too late.
It had pervaded my sense of smell and teased my tastebuds. I was powerless to my craving. ‘Please! Go back -’ I urged as he tried to show his devotion by sitting as close as possible beside me.
‘Why? What’s wrong?’ he asked, puzzled and unaware of the danger he was in. Eventually he grasped the urgency of the situation; he backed away at the sight of the flames reflecting off my yearning black fangs.
‘I can’t do this any more,’ I cried as I started chanting to myself.
‘What are you doing?’ he asked confused and fearing the worst.
Ignoring him and the growing cloud above my head, I continue to cast a protection spell over him, whilst trying to suppress the urge to attack: ‘I call upon the help of my coven to protect him when I summon. Engulf him with your protective light to keep him sane, safe and from my bite.’ The pain simmered as the blood teased my hungry, damaged body, leaving me just enough time to focus and finish the spell.
A white bolt of light shot through my body and my head, meeting the green mass, as it shot a hole straight through it. The light returned to sight with seconds and wrapped itself around Luther. ‘AAAAHH! What is it?!’ he shrieked as he tried to wave it away.
The white mist swirled around him before evaporating into his head, healing both his wound and his bruises. ‘I cast a protection spell over you. I can’t control my thirst and the last thing I want to do is harm you,’ I explained as the pain returned in an overwhelming fashion, throwing me off guard and making Luther jump out of the way to avoid the bolts discharging from new gashes.
Hypnotised by the green cloud swirling above my head, he began to play with it, wafting at it and following it with his gaze as I screamed on in agony. ‘LUTHER!’ I bawled.
He was captivated by the spinning green gas that began to gain momentum and spiral. Racing round and round, the gas began to emulate a small tornado. Luther reached out and touched it, causing it to quiver and then blast through the door, shaking the building on its way out.
Shaking his head, Luther lurched back to reality and began throwing cups of water on my stomach, in an attempt to help. The water did nothing, except clear the blood and reveal the full extent of the wounds. ‘I can see it! But what the -’ Luther asked, keeping his distance.
Managing to prop myself up against the wall, I looked down. ‘I can see my baby’s hand… there’s its foot…’ I panted.
Luther cautiously moved closer to get a better view. ‘I can see an eye! It’s looking at me!’ he shrieked in excitement. I began to push, unsure of what the baby’s chosen exit would be. ‘I can see it, Faith. It’s looking directly at me!’ He threw more water on.
And then, he froze.
He moved closer to the largest wound. ‘What’s wrong?’ I panted, as his astonished face began to scare me. He broke away his stare and looked straight at me.
Taking a deep breath, he looked down at my stomach to make sure his observation was correct: ‘Faith… It - it’s got four eyes.’
I looked down at my stomach and saw a hand slowly feel its way out of a wound. Knowing I would love my baby no matter what it looked like, I reached out and put my finger in front of the bloody palm.
We waited with apprehension, wondering if it would try to blast my hand off but instead, as though sensing I was its mother, it softly wrapped its tiny fingers around mine and squeezed hard. At that moment, I realised the pain would be worth it just to hold mine and Rohan’s creation in my arms for the first time.
