This was just the start of things and Ashton still had to explain everything to his friends and your family. Hopefully things would go a lot smoother and that everyone would understand.
The boys stared at the child in confusion. Looking between the baby and Ashton. Everything their friend just told them wasn't making any sense. Ashton had never talked about wanting to adopt a child. Nothing in the past few months hinted at this event ever happening. The smile on Ashton's face was one saying "please accept this and don't question it at all" but how would his friends not question it? This was so unlike Ashton and they were starting to wonder if he was a bit ill. "When did you find time to adopt a child?" Michael spoke up. His eyes darting back to the infant that was curiously staring at the three men hovering over him. Ashton's mind raced as he thought on how to answer.
"I have my ways," he responded, nudging his friends out the way to grab Ian. "You're going to scare him with all the staring," he said.
"What does Y/N think about all of this?" Calum questioned. Knowing you must have been freaking out over the fact that your boyfriend adopted a baby.
"We adopted Ian together," Ashton lied. She wasn't on board with the idea at first and only gave me a month to care for the child. He thought to himself.
"Ian?" Luke said quizzically, "You named him Ian?" Ashton grinned and looked down at the child in his arms as he nodded. Luke let out an distinguishable sound and he plopped down on the couch that was in the recording studio. The boys weren't even sure if Ashton was capable of taking care of a child. All of it sounded insane and the guys started to think about how much the press was going to hound them down over this.
"Look Y/N and I are trying to keep this quiet, so don't go blabbing the news around or posting pictures of him online." The words came out sternly and Ashton stared at each of them with a warning look. In order for him to do this right and without getting caught everyone had to play by his rules. Ashton's face scrunched up when he got a whiff of something foul. His eyebrows furrowed and he looked down at Ian was was grinning at him like he had heard something extremely funny. Ashton lifted Ian up and gave his bottom a sniff before rearing back. "Oh man that's bad," he choked out, holding Ian at arms length. "Seriously you poop like eight times a day...so which one of your uncles would like to change you?" Ashton said, looking at his three friends who immediately stepped back.
"No way that's your job," Calum laughed, heading back into recording booth. Ashton looked between Luke and Michael this time wondering if they would do the job.
"I uh-I think I left a sandwich somewhere," Luke mumbled, leaving Michael behind. It only took Michael a minute to realize what had happened and before he could even respond Ashton was placing Ian into his arms.
"Oh-What! Ashton he's your kid!" Michael shouted after his wavy haired friend, who had joined Ashton in the recording booth. Michael looked at Ian with an uneasy smile. The infant only wiggling about in Michael's arms and chewing at his tiny fist. "Go easy on me okay. I don't know how to do this?" Michael said, grabbing the diaper bag Ashton had carried with him. Michael carefully laid Ian down on the couch and he unbuttoned his one piece outfit that you had gotten him. One of Michael's eyes squinted closed as he peeled open the straps to his diaper. He slowly pulled open the diaper and then gagged. trying hard not to breath through his nose at the sight. "Whatever you and Y/N feed this kid you gotta change it!" Michael yelled over his shoulder turning back to Ian. Michael pulled the wipes from out the diaper bag and began to change Ian's diaper. Ashton looked through the window of the recording booth with a smile. So far everything was going well and he was happy his friends were accepting the news.
You stared in amusement trying not to laugh as Luke, Calum, and Michael argued over who was going to be the favorite uncle. It seemed like they had been arguing for a long time. Way before you showed up to take Ian home. Ever since you and Ashton decided to "adopt" the baby you had temporarily moved into his apartment. This way you both would be able to take care of the child and alternate on who got sleep. "I'm the one that changed his diaper. That gives me a ton of points in the favorite uncle department!" Michael exclaimed, hands flying up in the air in exasperation. Calum rolled his arms, holding Ian close to his chest.
"He already clings to me, so clearly that means I'm the favorite," Calum interjected, pointing down to Ian who seemed to be drifting off in the Maori boy's arms. Taking no mind to the arguing voices and his movements. So far Ian was easy to put down to bed, but the minute you sat him down he began to cry. Ashton was the first to notice you, his eyes lighting up and a smile embracing his face as he waved you in. You pushed off the door frame and moved to sit on the arm of the couch next to your boyfriend.
"Hi," you smiled, leaning down to kiss him. Ashton smiled into the kiss and before you could pull away he sent another peck to your lips. You let out a tiny laugh in response and your attention turned on the three men. "Hi boys," you chirped, breaking through their yelling. A collective of greetings came from them in return and soon the conversation turned to something different. You slid down into Ashton's lap this time and rested your head on his shoulder. A yawn left your lips and Ashton looked down at you in curiousness. He knew you were exhausted. The both of you were still getting used to being "parents" and Ashton hadn't realized how hard it would be until now. So far you've had Ian for only a week and already the two of you were burnt out.
"Long day?" Ashton questioned, running his hand up and down your arm. You nodded in response, fighting hard to keep your eyes open.
"All I want is a hot shower and a nap," you sighed, eyes glancing over to Ian, who had finally fallen asleep. "You know at some point we're going to have to send him to a daycare," you mumbled. Which meant they'd ask a bunch of questions on his birth and stuff neither you nor Ashton knew.
"How about we hire a nanny instead," Ashton suggested, thinking exactly what you had been. You let out a snort at his words.
"We don't have money for a nanny," you told him.
"We don't have money for a daycare either," he sighed. Ashton was still learning how to do this whole parenting thing and he was becoming highly aware of how much money went into taking care of a child. Money he didn't have. "Maybe my mom would be able to babysit some days...and possibly your parents." Ashton had said the last four words slowly. Your parents. The only people that didn't know about Ian. Telling them was the one thing you were dreading the most. You had always had a set plan. Go to college, graduate, career, possibly marriage and children. You were still in college and currently taking care of a child. Taking care of a child with your rock star boyfriend who often traveled. They weren't going to be too thrilled about the whole thing.
"We'll figure it out," you whispered, chewing on your bottom lip at the thought of telling your parents. For now all you wanted to do was soak in the blissful moments with your boyfriend and his friends. All you wanted to do was pretend that what you were doing was the right thing and that you're small family would be alright.
