"HIS HEART RATE IS DROPPING!"
"Call the doctors!"
As soon as Sang-hyeok said "no", the heartbeat monitor's beeping slowed down dangerously.
Everyone panicked but Coach managed to stay calm and call a doctor to check on Sang-hyeok.
The members of SK Telecom T1 were forced out of Sang-hyeok's room as the medical team entered, closed the curtains, and began their work, attempting to restore Sang-hyeok's normal heartbeat rate.
The members looked shaken to the core. First, they had a devastating loss, and now they may or may not lose their mid laner...
All this happened as Sang-hyeok's spirit and The Mist stood and watch from behind.
"Be careful what you say," it warned, "It affects the condition of your human body."
Sang-hyeok sighed.
"In a few months Sky can be better than me, if he trains hard enough," he said through gritted teeth, silently cringing on the inside. He hated to see his members hurt... But his selfish self just wanted to run away.
He was torn, torn between eternal freedom and being with his friends again.
Eternal freedom was what he wanted, but could he really enjoy it while his friends suffered from his departure?
He could stay with his friends but was he really going to ditch his shot at being free from toxicity, from his problems, from everything?
He didn't know. His mind was a mess.
This whole test was driving him crazy and he hated it.
Why can't he just die already? The one bullet tearing through him was already painful enough, he didn't need to feel emotional pain as well.
His eyes wandered somewhere else, not wanting to look at his members' faces.
He didn't want to see Wang-ho cry again. He didn't want to see Jun-sik looking so guiltridden. He didn't want to see Seung-hoon faking more smiles for the sake of keeping everyone sane. He didn't want to see Ha-neul slowly breaking under pressure. He didn't want to see Sung-gu attempt to convince everyone that everything was going to be okay. He didn't want to see how close Jae-wan was to losing it. He didn't want to see the Coach struggling to keep his cool.
His eyes landed on a nearby clock.
2339 hours.
Twenty one more minutes and the day will end.
Twenty one more minutes and he'll pass the test.
Twenty more minutes and all of this will be over.
...
"W-what do you mean by h-hyung's n-n-n-not g-going to m-make it?"
Sang-hyeok's eyes widened at the sound of Wang-ho's stuttering.
He quickly turned his attention back to his members. All eyes were on Coach Kkoma. Everyone looked like they had just gotten shot in the chest.
"B-but coach..." Jae-wan forced a laugh, "Y-You said... You said he wasn't seriously inj-"
"I lied."
Those two words shut everyone up.
For what seemed like forever, there was pin drop silence at the hallway outside Sang-hyeok's room.
Nobody dared to say anything. Nobody even dared to move.
The only sounds that can be heard are the doctors' hushed murmurs in Sang-hyeok's room as they continued trying to save a seemingly hopeless case.
Each member stared at the Coach, wide-eyed, mouths slightly gaping. The atmosphere was tense.
Seung-hoon, being the most emotionally open one, was the first to break that dreaded silence.
"What the fuck are you saying, coach? Sang-hyeok's gonna live!" he grinned, almost like a madman, as if what the Coach said was the funniest joke he's ever heard. He was joined by Jae-wan, who nodded vigorously at that statement.
"Sang-hyeok's strong. He never gives up. He's not dying that easily..." Jae-wan declared, though it seemed to Sang-hyeok that Jae-wan was trying to convince himself the exact same thing.
Jun-sik stayed dangerously quiet as he dropped and sat on the floor, his eyes staring into the distance.
"It's gonna be okay... It's gonna be okay... Hyung's gonna wake up... He's gonna wake up..." Sung-gu whispered to himself, tone low, almost like chanting a mantra.
Ha-neul stood perfectly still, as if trying to process everything. Sang-hyeok watched his predecessor slowly break on the inside, yet keeping a straight face to not cause any more alarm to the rest.
And Wang-ho?
Sang-hyeok felt panic rise within him as the young jungler was nowhere to be found.
No, wait.
There he was! Going into the elevator.
Something stirred in Sang-hyeok when he saw the floor number.
Han Wang-ho was headed towards the rooftop.
