Chapter 8: Our Lair
I caught my breath when she unexpectedly materialized in front of me.
"WOULD YOU STOP DOING THAT!?" I whispered, shouting it in her face so she's the only one who can hear it.
"I'm sorry. I just wanted to know where you go during the day and I didn't know school has improved since the last century." Kate criticized.
I pulled her outside the cafeteria and into the forest backyard of the school so I can talk to her freely without anyone thinking I'm going crazy. She stood there, like a little kid, admiring everything around her.
"I never knew so much has changed since I died." She said the last word quietly. I immediately felt sorry for her. I'm such a pathetic loser because I take pity on everyone today! I know it hurts to be in her place so I kinda lighten the mood a little bit.
"Well, you need to get out more and don't get stuck in my room. The world is a big place. Explore." I suggested.
"I can't." She replied sadly, looking at the roses in the bush lovingly.
"Why not?" I asked questioningly. I know ghosts can materialize wherever they want. What's the matter with her? I started biting my lip because that's what I do if I really think deep. Before I can draw my own conclusion, she replied.
"I can't seem to leave the place. Something is waiting for me there. This is the first time I got out of the room, when you came! When I found out about this, I tried to go to different places but I can't. I go back to our room if I go anywhere else." She cried, begging me to understand. The only problem is, I can't!
"What do you mean? You can only go to places I have been to?" That's the only conclusion I can sum up. But why didn't she appear before? In New York, I mean. She could've just walked in front of our lawn in an early morning and call out to me, 'Hey! You who can see ghosts! I come in peace!' Or something like that.
"No, that's not it. Maybe, I'm the one you've been waiting for!" I connected a different story again. But why? Why me?
She seemed to read my mind when she replied, "Maybe you are! And I can only follow you if you're close to the vicinity where I died!" She didn't even flinch as I did when she said the word 'died'. She is too happy when she came up with the purpose of why she's still in the mortal realm.
"Then I need to be in the vicinity to help you move on because maybe the key to your murder is in this town!" I once again concluded.
She looked excitedly in my eyes, waiting for something to come out of my mouth. But I only answered, "We'll talk some more later. I have classes to catch. See you at home!" as cheerfully as I can when I heard the bell ring. I can tell she's excited because there is that certain gleam in her eyes as she dematerialized and as she whispered a thank you in my direction.

My stomach didn't get what it wants. Well, more like NEEDS. My hungry belly was growling like a Bengal Tiger in a desert, searching for food. I had to take bathroom breaks and sneak a few bites just to stop it from murdering my seatmates in Skills for Living, Arts and Computer. I thought we can actually eat something in Skills for Living but nooooo, Ms. Blakefort has to discuss first. It was in the third floor, where all the dead subjects are (except for Gym--it is there because there's no room in the 1st and 2nd floor).
