Chapter 1

It was a warm and peaceful night for everyone. The shape of the moon is as round as the clock that both resemble time. Its illumination from the sky brightens the dark of the night like a flashlight that regains the absence of the light from every edge of the town. The cold air sooths every hair on the skin which relaxes each mind that feels the night is crawling over them.

Everyone's smile is as bright as the refraction of the light of the moon in their cups, but not for Carl. Knowing everybody's safe and sound is enough to give him the biggest smile of his life, but losing a trustworthy friend, a respectful leader and a wise mentor makes him feel like gravity's taking down his knees.

Carl Holmes is an inspector in the Connecticut State Police who is well-known for his 3 solved cases including his recent, the Constantine case that was named after the Roman Emperor Constantine I who used the symbol Chi Ro meaning Christos or Christ, for he believed that he will win his war against his enemies who were twice as many as his soldiers. He resembles Dwayne Cross, who murdered people who are rich and egocentric people in Connecticut and branded them the symbol Chi Ro using enough heated metal to seal the sign in his victims' foreheads. Because of this case, he loses one of the greatest men he's ever known, Chief Police Officer Reuben Stark.

Our life is made by the death of others. Da vinci's words came to his. But it was a deep, painful scar to him to lose a friend like Officer Stark that lead to the thought that he blames himself for doing nothing when Officer Stark was burned to death.

Before Cross was pursued, Holmes and Stark went to him in an abandoned Church in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It was a stormy evening. The flood was about up to their ankles that made their light foot heavy. The Church can be barely seen by their keen eyes because of the wind that blows the rain drops right into their faces as they run towards the church. I know that smell. Carl then felt something odd, but ignored it and focuses on what lies beyond the door. Officer Stark then pulled his gun with his right arm and poses it at his chest, holding the gun vertically. As they entered the church they saw Dwayne Cross burning monies in a huge fire he created at the front of the altar.

Cross was having his own ritual, burning the belongings of his victims in order to "clean" their polluted hearts. Cross believes that the fire he created can clean the sins of the people he murdered.

"Freeze!" Carl yelled, pointing a gun at Cross.

As Cross turns around, they hold their guns even tighter. Cross was holding a victim in his left arm and pointed a knife in his victim's neck.

"Drop those guns or he will see where he'll go after his death." Cross threatened them as he gasps.

They then have an intense moment of silence without knowing that the fire is getting wider and higher that it touched the woods on the broken ceiling of the church, causing the slacking woods to fall one by one. Carl grabbed the moment to shoot Cross in the right thigh but it was inadequate to stop Cross. It triggered Cross to slit his victim's throat that leads to Officer Stark to shoot him.

Carl stopped for a moment, screaming inside his head. His faced turned red, his eyes widened as he looked upon his friend. Officer Stark was on fire. His whole body is burning. Carl's teeth were grinding each other. He then pulled the trigger, putting the bullets through Cross' body. Cross fell into his own fire, burning his own body.

Looking for a water source inside the small church, he saw nothing. Carl then just reaches his right hand to Stark's burning hand but the fire begins to crawl in his own arms. He manages to remove his black leather jacket before it crawls into his body. He realizes that it was a gas he smelled before, and they were soaked in it so he removed his suit and long sleeves. He weeps his hands into the dusts of the ground and begins to pull Stark outside, enduring the pain by the burning hands of Stark.

Carl opened the door by his back. Still at his panic state, he pulled Officer Stark even stronger. His face was still red, still grinding his teeth. His mind was about to explode anytime. His eyes were still dropping tears. He was upset and angry.

A little more Officer! Just a little more!

He arrived outside at the front of the door. I only smelled the gas right here.

As Stark's burning body leaves the door, the fire crawled into the arms of Carl again. He released his friends arm in dropped into the ground and quickly he found a small amount of water saved in a concaved spot on the ground. The fire also crawled at into the gas that is pouring from the room of the church into the grounds in front of the door. It was a gas from a sprinkler, angled in order to perform a drop of the gas. The fire burned the gas inside the sprinkler that enables Carl to continue pulling Stark into the heavy rain.

Don't even try to die on me now! He screams inside his head.

Finally, the heavy rain killed the fire in Officer Stark's body. His face is unrecognizable. His whole body is almost burned to crisp.

"No, no! You'll gonna be alright Officer Stark! Don't even dare to die on me!" His tears begin to fall as he carries Stark's body and run towards the car. Hoping Officer Stark is still alive, he drives to the nearest hospital, but fails to save him.

"He's already gone. I'm so sorry." Said the doctor.
