Chapter Two

I place a sandwich in front of Christie, the girl who stupidly walked into town. I volunteered to let her stay with me, no one else wanted to take her. And even though it's only been thrity minutes, I already can't stand the woman.

“Why can’t I leave?” She asks for the third time. Apparently she can't get the notion of being stuck in a town by a magical border into her thick skull.

Aleister sighs, “You wouldn't be able too even if you tried. You’ve crossed the town line, there's no going back now.”

She looks at us both like we’re crazy. “You guys are talking nonsense!” She says.

I roll my eyes and resist slapping her. “ If you don't believe us go try crossing the border, then you'll see that you're stuck here like the rest of us. And just wait until eight o’clock. Then tell me that we’re not making sense.” I say and place a sandwich in front of Aleister.

He takes it and eats it all quickly. I go over to the front door that’s lying on the floor. I pick it up and lean it against the frame where it belongs. I have to get that fixed before nightfall. Aleister walks over to me.

“I have to go.” He glances at Christie and then adds, "And watch out for her, make sure she doesn't die on her first night. I'll be back before it starts." He says and leaves.

        “Before what starts?” Christie asks.

I turn to her. “The Witching Time.”

I grab Christie’s wrist and drag her upstairs.

“Let go of me!” She yells.

I don’t listen to her. I look at my watch. 7:56.

“We have four minutes.” I say.

We reach my room and I shove her into the closet.

“You can’t keep me in here!” She screams.

I close the door and settle in beside her. “Shut up.” I say.

She glares at me but obeys. I check my watch again. 7:59. Nerves crash through me. Aleister was supposed to be here by now. Where is he? I think worriedly. I close my eyes and lean my head against the wall. I’m glad Christie decided to be quiet. I hear the front door open and footsteps on the stairs. Then the bedroom door opens. I hold my breath and grab Christie’s hand. The closet door opens very slowly. Anticipation thrashes inside me, mixes with the anxiety and fear.

I sigh in relief when I see it’s just Aleister. I stand up and wrap him in my arms.

“You said you were coming back before it started, you liar.” I give him a quick kiss.

“Come on,” He says and grabs Christie.

He leads us both outside. A group of demons come from the shadows, and once they step into the light I see that their skin is a strange orange color and their eyes are black.

“What the hell is that?” Christie asks from behind me.

“That,” I say, “Is the reason we wanted you to not come into town.”
