How many times had you failed that math test?
You counted on your fingers, losing track and counting anyways just to procrastinate, until you ran out of fingers to count on. This was your third retake since it had been given out a few weeks ago. You had to pass this one, or else there'd be no more chances for your grade to be risen. It'd taken all you had to get your teacher to give you a second chance, and, well, you'd almost had to bribe her for the third chance. You hated high school so much.
Sighing, you buried your face in your elbow and bit your lip. The frustration was bubbling up inside of you, and you picked up your phone and dialed your boyfriend's number.
"Hello Y/N. Now's not a good time," he said bluntly into the phone.
"Why?" you murmured.
"I'm trying to work on this level of Overwatch. I just... can't... pass..." Suddenly you heard a crash as though the phone had fallen on the floor and Zane let out a string of curse words.
"Are you okay?" you asked gasping.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Zane muttered into the phone. "I just... screwed up again, ugh. Those goddamn... never mind. What's up?"
You rolled your eyes and flopped on your bed, moving your legs back and forth like a middle-schooler getting asked to her first dance. "I just can't do any of this stupid math. You're good at math, will you come help me?"
"I needa pass this level, Y/N. Sorry, no can do."
You huffed. "Zane! Is Overwatch really more important than me?"
You could hear Zane's breathing on the other line as if he was contemplating the question. "Zane! Why am I even dating you?"
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding!" Zane said. You could feel his immediate change in mood. You loved how he would always perk up while talking to you. "I'll be over soon. Sit tight."
You smiled and hung up and turned over on your back, staring up at the ceiling. You knew it was trivial and cliche, to say you were in love when you were only a junior in high school, but you did have insane feelings for him. Even though he'd only begun talking to you because you were seated next to him in math in your freshman year. Of course, you'd been failing the subject since the beginning of time, but you asked him one day if he'd help you study for an upcoming test. He'd agreed (after just a little persuasion of course) and things only went up from there.
A cool breeze nipped your bare legs (you were only wearing a sweatshirt and shorts) and you glanced up to see Zane leaning over the opened windowsill, with an unusually cocky smile on his face. You always felt special whenever he didn't wear his stupid mask, because he only took it off around you. You savored the feeling.
"Welcome," you said, giggling. He rolled his eyes.
"Thanks to your neediness, here I am instead of playing Overwatch," he said, although you knew he didn't mind.
You smiled. "Come on, Zane. I really do need to have this test done and I'd rather have it done well as this is my last straw."
Zane pulled himself through the window and landed on the floor on his stomach. He pushed himself up and sat on your bed and slung an arm around your waist. "I know, I got it. What do you need help with?"
You bit your lower lip and showed him the test, flushing. "A-all of the questions."
Zane sighed and took the test packet in his hands, scanning it over with his bright blue eyes. "I guess this'll be a long night.
---
"...And so then does this go here, and then the answer becomes twenty three?" you asked, pointing to the final problem on the test.
Zane nodded and flipped his bangs out of his face.
You reached up and touched them gently. "Your bangs are so long," you commented, not taking your E/C eyes off of them.
He sighed. "I know. I'll get them cut, don't worry."
"I didn't say that was a bad thing," you said. "Whatever you want. I think you look great either way."
"Well, you have to say that, you're--"
"I'm not your mom, Zane," you said, giggling. "I'm your girlfriend, and I'm entitled to think anything about you. I think you're perfect just the way you are, and I love you."
Zane stopped checking over your answers on your test. Your heart began to pound once you replayed the words you'd just said over in your head.
"U-um, I-I didn't mean--I mean, um, I just--" you began, then felt your cheeks flush. "I just thought... I didn't mean for that to come out..." You buried your face in your bedsheets.
"Hey," he said, laying down across your bed to match your position. You picked your head up to face him. He had on a very out-of-character smile.
"S-sorry," you stammered. You blushed even harder upon realizing how close you were--mere centimeters apart.
"It's okay Y/N, you don't need to apologize. And now that I'm sure I know how you feel about me, I'm sure about how I feel about you. I love you, Y/N L/N."
You giggled. "I love you too."
"Can I kiss you?" he asked suddenly.
Your eyes widened in surprise, and then you nodded.
He leaned forward and his hand brushed your cheek to cup it lightly. You closed your eyes as he closed his and his lips pressed against your's in a gentle a pure action. When his lips were against your's, you felt less... confused. Frustrated at that stupid test. Angry. All of your bad emotions just... flew away. You could feel less like the awkward, unromantic teenagers you really were, and felt like you were carefree. Carefree in the kind of way that you didn't have any stress about that math test, or the upcoming college applications, or any girls at school that were causing drama. You felt at home and you kept your lips against his to keep that feeling. But he was that feeling.
This must be what being in love felt like.
You parted from the kiss and kept your foreheads pressed together romantically. You smiled and laughed a bit.
Suddenly, Zane's phone buzzed. Panicked, he glanced at it. "Oh crap. Y/N, I'm so sorry... I was supposed to be home ten minutes ago!"
You shook your head. "Don't worry about it. Good night, Zane."
He smiled and opened your window. "You too. I love you." He crawled out, and you watched him nimbly hop down the Japanese maple that sat outside your bedroom window and you sighed in a satisfied way and fell back on your bed, your H/L H/C hair sprawling out over the pillow.
"I love you," you repeated to yourself over and over. You hugged one of your pillows, still whispering the phrase.
This was without a doubt what love felt like.
