"you said our name was?" Chief hoppers question woke me from my daydream, I turned to the questioning man across the desk.

"I didn't" I answered instantly while searching my bag for a cigarette "mind if I smoke?" However, I didn't wait for an answer and with a flick of my silver-plated zippo lighter my lungs were able to breathe again.

"well mind if I ask?"

"no" as I spoke clouds of smoke emerged from my lungs and danced above my bloody mouth.

The man was silent. The silence was thick and heavy contrasting the tranquility of the car ride. Under his scrutiny I began to feel uncomfortable which honesty was unwelcome and foreign.

"Charlotte Varga" I spoke quietly before he could ask again.

He leaned forward and rested his head atop his hands as he once again looked upon me with curiosity. "I was born right here in Hawkins" he pauses, leans back and runs his hands through his brown hair before he lights a cigarette as well "I've been chief of police for a total of 4 years and I know this town and its people like the back of my hand" he sits up and points to me with his cigarette "but I do not know you" he pauses and looks closer at my relaxed form "what did you appear out of thin air?"

The thick air is tinged with the scent of cigarette smoke and as I crush the bud of the stick in an overfilled tortoise shell ash tray I take his words into consideration. I was surprised that this man did not know of me, not to sound conceded but my first few weeks of living in Hawkins felt like I was living in a zoo as the prize attraction. I guess it came with moving to such a small town, everyone wanted to see a new face. I thought that the arrival of a 17-year-old girl alone with only her 11-year-old brother for company in a town where no one moves into only grows up would be front page news. However, I could tell the news of my arrival was the last thing on Chief Jim Hoppers mind.

"Can I leave? There is somebody I need to get home too" I ask breaking the silence.

He checks his watch and notices the time and motions for me to leave his office, I stand and head out not before looking back to see the man grab his coat and hat. We arrive at his prowler and he open the door for me, I shiver as the cool air brushes against my naked legs. "jump in ill blast the heat" he responds to my shivering and pushes my lightly into the car with his hand on the small of my back.
