Alexa screamed and placed her hands over her face. Tears streamed down her cheeks and she sobbed into her palms. Owen came over and rubbed her back. At the sight of her leg he put his arms under her back and her legs, picking her up bridal style.

Alexa was still sobbing as she was taken to the refugee center near the docks. The sun rose over the horizon and lit up the docks with morning light.

"Alexa..." Claire walked over to the woman. She pried Alexa's hands off her face and looked into her tear-filled eyes.

"Go home, Alexa. I don't think it'll be good for you to stay any longer."

Alexa nodded, biting her lip to keep a sob down. Claire backed up as both Zach and Gray came to say goodbye. The brothers soundlessly gave Alexa a hug.

"Thank you, Miss." Gray said.

"It was no problem, Gray." Alexa gave a small smile. The brothers' parents thanked her next for saving their sons.

Alexa was on the last helicopter out - Zach, Gray, and their parents being on the first. Claire and Owen decided to stay on the island.

The helicopter's blades whirred loudly as Alexa walked slowly towards it, shaking and running her hands down her arms. She didn't want to leave, but she had to. Alexa looked back to Claire and Owen, their forms standing in the empty refugee center.

Claire smiled and waved. Owen gave a nod of approval and did the same.

Alexa smiled back. She turned her head and climbed into the helicopter home.

> TWO YEARS LATER <

Alexa walked back into her house, tears streaming down her face. She'd been in the backyard by the young cherry tree she had planted weeks before she left. The blossoms were white and tinged with pink around this time.

It was Neph's birthday. Tomorrow was her death-day. Alexa picked up the old picture of her and Claire. They had their arms around each other and were smiling without a care in the world.

What she would give to be back with Claire again.

She put the picture back on the bedside table and picked up the one next to it. It was a picture of the twins the day they hatched.

"Why did you have to die?" Alexa whispered.

She looked down at the photo and water droplets began dripping onto the glass. Alexa replaced the photo to its spot and got into bed. Her tears stained her pillow as she tried to fall asleep for the night.

Alexa woke up the next day, dried tears on her face and her pillow smelling of salt. She reached out for her phone and checked the time.

8:47. Neph's hatch-time.

"Why does the world hate me today?" Alexa mumbled into her pillow.

A knock sounded on her door and Alexa raised her head. The woman tried fixing her messy hair as she walked through the living room and to the front door.

8:48

"Who is it?"

No response. Alexa started walking away. She headed for the kitchen until a scratch at her door stopped her.

8:49

Alexa sighed, turning around and going back for the door. Her hand hesitated on the handle. Alexa pushed the handle down and pulled the door open.

8:50

Two off-white puppies with ruby eyes sat on her doorstep. Their fur was mottled with patches of grey and silver.

And, for the first time in those long two years, Alexa gave a genuine smile.

"I've missed you."
