~The importance of friendship in rough times~
The wind howled as it whipped snow around the two figures climbing the mountain in the darkness of night. Dressed in head to toe in thick clothes, the two men held onto each other, for fear of losing themselves in the dark. "Link! We need to find shelter!" Rhett bellowed over the wind's screams.
"I know, I think I saw a cabin up a little farther before the sun set!" Link replied, pressing himself closer to Rhett. Rhett didn't reply to that, but he squinted his eyes and looked around. Eventually, he spotted the cabin, only about five hundred feet away from them. Rhett and Link's faces had gone numb from the cold, making their speech slurred and lazy sounding.
"Rhett, I can't go any farther. Please, my legs are going to fall off." The gentle giant sympathized with his friend and wrapped his arm around Link's shoulders, helping to guide him. But it still didn't help. Link fell to his knees and crumpled down into the freezing cold snow. Rhett knelt down next to Link, slipping his arm under Link's torso and rolling the man over onto his back. Rhett cradled Link in his arms, hoping with all his heart Link would find the strength in himself to walk the rest of the way.
"Come on, brother, don't give up now. We're almost to shelter. You're gonna be alright, Link. I'll take care of you." Rhett placed one of his gloved hands over Link's flushed red cheek in an attempt to protect the younger man's face from the bitter cold.
"Rhett," Link mumbled, "I can't move. Don't wait for me, get to the shelter. Get to safety."
"Link, no, this cold must be getting to your brain. I'm not gonna leave you." At that, Rhett stood up and lifted Link up with him. He began to carry the dark haired man. As he trudged through the thick snow, Rhett could tell that Link had passed out when he felt Link's head flop back. Rhett carried Link all the way to the small, empty cabin on the mountainside. He was surprised to find the door was unlocked, and he carried Link inside.
Finding a small couch, Rhett lied Link down before running to close the door. It was dark in the cabin, but there was a little moonlight that lit his way to a lantern. A warm glow filled the cabin and Rhett let himself collapse on the floor. He closed his eyes and rested for a few moments, before getting back up and turning more lanterns on. The cabin was relatively large, having a living area, dining area, small kitchenette, a bathroom, and two small bedrooms. Rhett found a pile of wood, neatly stacked by the fireplace and some matches. The gentle giant soon had got a decent fire going and he relished the warmth of the contained flames.
His green eyes peered around and he saw a couple thick blankets folded up at the end of the couch Link was lying on. Rhett took one and covered Link up with it. He then carefully picked Link up again and laid him on the floor by the fire with a pillow to rest his head on. Rhett wrapped himself in a blanket and sat next to his unconscious friend.
After a few more minutes, Link's blue eyes fluttered open and he coughed. "Rhett?"
"Hey buddy, feeling okay?"
"No, not really, but I do feel a little better. Did you carry me?"
"Yeah, I had no choice. You were so out of it, you told me to leave you." Link chuckled ever so softly at that.
"Sorry about that. How's your back?"
"No worse than it was before. Never thought I'd be spending my Thanksgiving like this."
"Me either," Link mumbled, his exhausted body starting to force him to sleep.
"Imagine," Rhett spoke in the gentle, soft baritone of his voice, "what if we had never had that shared dream. We wouldn't have woken up in a similar cabin like this, both knowing we had to go out there and find the last Randler. We wouldn't have been walking through that blizzard, up a mountain to this almost too perfect seeming cabin. We wouldn't have almost frozen to death. No, we would be resting with family after having a wonderful meal. We would be talking, laughing, creating memories, but no. Life is a strange thing. One can never really know what's going to happen next. We certainly didn't. But, we gotta find that Randler, and we're going to. He's atop this mountain, and we're already almost half way there. We're gonna save him, this weather is killing the little guy. We're gonna make it, brother, we're gonna save that Randler."
