The group raced back to the city. It had started to rain and it drenched them to their bones. Pidge was shivering violently, she was much smaller than the rest of them and kept coughing like a dying smoker. Keith was sitting, paralyzed on Shiro's horse. Shiro and Lance were running on either side of the horse, the reigns in Shiro's clenched fist. Hunk had a hand on Pidge's back, trying to keep her more or less upright. Keith was leaning into the horses mane and crying.

He kept whispering "I should have saved her."

Lance shook his head even though the older boy couldn't see him and said "She was beyond hope. I'm sorry Keith."

Shiro said "We couldn't have saved her. Not with that level of injury."

Keith nodded, face still pressed to the horses hair.

The group kept running.

Rain poured down on them in sheets. Their uniforms were soaked through and Lance could feel the chill right in his bones. He was almost certain that Shiro could hear his teeth chattering all the way on the other side of the horse. But he couldn't be sure.

A wet thud.

Lance skidded to a halt in the mud and Shiro yanked on the horses bridle. They turned to see Pidge sprawled facedown in the mud. Hunk was helping her up.

She batted him away "I'm fine." When she climbed to standing and started to step onto her left foot. When her weight spread into her ankle, she cried out in pain and immediately lifted it back off the ground.

Shiro said "Pidge, you're not fine."

"Yes. I am." She gritted her teeth and stepped on her foot again, this time only hissing slightly and limped forward a step or two.

Shiro looked at Hunk. The two nodded.

Pidge was swept off the ground by Hunk and he carried her over to the horse. He placed her behind Keith and made her wrap her little arms around the older boy.

"Stop it! Let me down!" She tried to wriggle away but Hunk pinned her to Keith's back.

Hunk sighed "No. Sorry Pidge."

Shiro nodded "Whatever just happened, it hurt. It can't get any worse or you risk not being able to heal."

Hunk rubbed her back for a moment before she relaxed into Keith's back. Hunk said "And besides. How much would your brother scold you if he found out you got hurt?"

Pidge snorted "He would probably ignore me for a week."

Hunk smiled "And I would feel horrible."

"It wasn't your fault, Hunk." She said.

"But I should have been paying better attention. I knew you had lower running stamina than us and should have taken that into account but I didn't." He sighed "Sorry Pidge."

She ruffled her sopping wet hair "Don't worry about it, buddy."

Shiro said "Let's go." He tugged on the horses reigns and pretty soon the group was running again, Pidge's arms wrapped around Keith's middle, Keith still crying into the horses mane.
