~ Harry
I'd got lost four times on the way here. Not two or three times. Four. I muttered profanities as I locked my bike to the rack. I wasn't late, I was on time. But now there were so many people here, that'd I stick out like a sore thumb, because I was obviously new. I walked down the hall. Trying not to draw attention to myself. I fiddled with the straps on my bag. Being the new kid is really shitty. People always judge you, before they get to meet the real you.
People looked at me as I made my way through the hall. Some girls stopped and stared at me. Like I was a present they were about to unwrap. I looked ahead, and tried to keep my pace fast, but not too panicked.
The warning bell rung, I made my way to the office. I stood awkwardly outside the principal's office. She must have noticed that I was standing there. She poked her head through the door.
"Harry Styles?"
"Yeah."
"Oh, it's good to meet you," she said, stepping out if her office to shake my hand. "I'm Mrs Wick."
I nodded.
"Would you like me to show you to your first class?" She said gesturing to my timetable.
"That would be great," I said, handing my timetable to her. She studied it for a moment.
"You have English with Mr Western," started her way down the hall, I slowly trailed behind her.
When we reached the classroom, she firmly knocked on the door.
"Mr Western?"
"Yes, Diane?"
"I have a new student for you. His name is Harry Styles." I felt 30 pairs of eyes instantly pin to me, I tried to keep my gaze directed at Mr Western. I could hear girls whispering to each other and guy comparing themselves to me, deciding whether I was a friend or a foe.
"Perfect another student to teach the wonderful world of English to," he said smiling brightly, gesturing to the rest of the class. You could tell he was putting on a show for Mrs Wick.
"I'll leave you to it," Mrs Wick said curtly, before leaving down the hall.
"How about you take a seat next to Jade up the back," he said gesturing to a girl with brown hair. Her hair was hanging over her face, head bowed.
"Shouldn't you be calling her Shrek?" asked one of the girls in the middle row laughing. I frowned. Mr Western didn't hear her though. His back was already turned back to the board. I frowned at the girl and continued towards my seat next to Jade.
When I reached her desk I stuck my hand out. "I'm Harry," I said, waiting for her to shake it.
She looked up at the sudden noise and frowned at me. That's when I saw a full view of her face.
Oh my god.
There was a scar that went from her left cheek, down into her t-shirt. It was puckered and red. Angry. Most of the redness was on her neck. She saw me staring, her eyes widened and quickly put her head down again. I could see the tears dripping onto her table. I quickly took my seat next to her. I didn't mean to upset her. It was just a surprise.
I decided I would speak to her once the period was over. Mr Western droned on about Shakespeare for the whole lesson, until the bell rang and he let us go. Everyone filed out of the room. Jade was slowly packing everything into her bag. I waited till she was done.
"I'm sorry that I upset you," I said standing in front of her desk. I tried to look as genuine as possible, I didn't let my smile falter.
She looked up at me blankly. She picked up her bag and stood in front of me. Staring at me.
"It was just a surprise. I mean, it's just a scar. It's nothing to be embarrassed about," I said, gesturing to her face. I could see her starting to get uncomfortable, biting onto her lip, fiddling with her hair.
This wasn't going as planned. I was looking at her full on in the face. I could tell she wasn't liking it. Her face was scrunching up and she couldn't look at me. She pushed her way past me out the door.
I walked past Mr Western's desk on the way out.
"Harry?"
"Yes, sir?" I said, pausing at his desk.
"Don't take anything that Jade does to heart. She doesn't speak anymore. No one has been able to get her to talk. It's good that you tried though," he said shrugging, an understanding smile on his lips. "You should be getting to your next class."
"I'll get going. Thank you sir," I waved to him as I walked out of the room.
At lunch I was confronted by two boys, Peter and Darryl. Peter had a long face with a sharp nose, it made him look a bit like a rat. Darryl had kind eyes but you could tell that when he was with his friends, he'd do what they do.
"So I saw you talking to Jade in English," Peter laughed, swinging his arm over my shoulder. "I wouldn't bother with that if I were you mate, I mean before her face got all fucked she used to be hot. But even then her brother wouldn't let any of us near her," he rolled his eyes and moved his arm off my shoulder.
"She's a total freak show now. She's got no friends, doesn't talk to anyone at all," Darryl shuddered, "we just wanted to let you know," he said hitting my shoulder.
"Don't want you to be making friends with the wrong people, with you being new and all."
I winced, "thanks for the heads up," I continued my way down the hall, ignoring their muttering as I turned my back to them.
I made my way into the cafeteria, not knowing where to sit, I went and found an empty bench. It wasn't long until I was swarmed by a group of girls.
"Is anyone sitting here?" one asked, biting her lips while eyeing my up and down.
I gritted my teeth but forced a smile upon my face.
"No," I said. All the girls piled their way onto the surrounding seats, each one trying to get a seat close to me.
"So do you need anyone to show you around to your classes?" the one next to me asked, leaning right in, placing her hand delicately on my forearm. "Because if you need any help, just come ask me. I'll show you everything," her eyes darted to my crotch for a second before meeting my eyes.
"I think I should fine," I mumbled, awkwardly looking around the cafeteria. My eyes met with Jade's, only for a brief moment, but long enough for my heart to skip a beat. I felt something with her, I wasn't sure what. But there was something there.
